Biography

Flo has considerable experience in applying geographic analysis to the study of human health related behaviours and outcomes. Her past work includes research into the geographic distribution of waterborne diseases, but her current focus is on understanding how children's environments shape their behaviour. She is employed on a career development fellowship with the UKCRC Centre for Diet and Activity Research (CEDAR)

Flo was heavily involved with the SPEEDY study; compiling questionnaires, collecting data, and generating objective environmental measures, and has published numerous papers exploring the relationships between school environments and children's weight status, diet and physical activity. Flo's interests lie in how children's environments are defined and characterised, and in how they shape behaviour. Much of her work makes use of geographic information systems (GIS), and multilevel statistical techniques that can model the geographical and temporal clustering present in many datasets.

Current work is particularly focused on the role of season and weather in shaping children's behaviour. Flo is currently analysing data from the International Children's Accelerometry Database (ICAD) to better understand these relationships. She is also working on using global positioning systems (GPS) to better understand the relationships between environmental exposure and behaviour.

As well as her research interests, Flo also contributes to teaching within Norwich Medical School. She runs seminars for the MBBS research methods program, and is a tutor for the Year 1 Student Selected Studies Epidemiology and Public Health theme. Flo is one of the technical contacts for ArcGIS at UEA (please e-mail arcgis.support@uea.ac.uk), and is keen to advise and collaborate on geographic analyses from a range of disciplines.

Key Research Interests

Flo has a specific focus on environmental determinants of diet and physical activity in children, with current research interests including:

  • The role of the school environment and how it may shape health-related behaviour both within and beyond the school gates
  • Novel methodologies for defining and characterising children’s environments
  • Weather and seasons as drivers of physical activity and dietary behaviours

Research Group Membership

Flo is funded through a career development fellowship from the Centre for Diet and Activity Research (CEDAR), and is based in the Population Health and Primary Care department in Norwich Medical School. Within CEDAR she is part of the group lead by Andy Jones working on environmental determinants of physical activity and diet. She also collaborate with members of Esther van Sluijs's group investigating the behavioural epidemiology of young people's physical activity.
