Services currently available to external users

External FAQ Update 30/04/2021

This is information relevant to visitors to the Library. If you are a UEA student or staff member there are also more detailed  Covid-19 FAQs available (login required). 

The Library building remains closed to ‘walk in’ visitors and the general public.  

At the present time the Library remains open for current staff and students. This is to ensure our staff and students are able to access our resources while we continue to observe social distancing requirements and operate a maximum capacity of 500 people at any one time. We continue to review ur operations in line with government guidance and will ensure this page is updated when any changes are made. 

Existing External users and SCONUL users who have a valid card may still be able to access the building. If you have any questions about this please contact us before attempting to enter the building by emailling


Information for external borrowers with a valid campus card:

UEA Library is open 24/7 for browsing and study space.

It is essential that you have a functioning campus card in order to be able to enter the library building. 

Checklist for accessing the Library:

  • You are required to wear a face covering in UEA Library at all times, unless exempt.
  • Book borrowing is via self-service. Please be aware that we are opearating a 48 hour quarantine on items returned to us, so if you have reached your borrowing limit you will need to return some items to us and then wait 2 working days before you can borrow again.
  • All book returns should be made to the external dropboxes outside the Library entrance.
  • Study spaces are in high demand and you may only use spaces marked with a green tick. Please ensure you follow all signage and guidance in the Library for the safety of yourself and others.


I have books on loan, and they won’t renew. What do I do? 

You can return items to us using our free postal book returns service through DHL. If you have items on loan which will not renew that means they are wanted by another student, so please do return the items to our external dropboxes or make use of our free returns service.  For further information about the service and details of how to arrange collection of your items please click here

If you are self-isolating please do not return your items until your self-isolation period is complete.
