Services currently available to external users

This is information relevant to  visitors to the Library. If you are a UEA student or staff member there are also more detailed Covid-19 FAQs available (login required).

The Library building remains closed to ‘walk in’ visitors and the general public.

We are unable to process any new External or SCONUL applications at this time.

Existing External users who have borrowing rights and a valid card are welcome to come in to browse and borrow.

Existing SCONUL users with a valid card may still use our walk-in study spaces to sit and work but may not borrow as the main UK SCONUL Access Scheme is currently suspended.  

We are unable to offer visitor PC access at this time.

Information for external borrowers with a valid campus card:

UEA Library is open 24/7 for browsing and study space.

It is essential that you have a functioning campus card in order to be able to enter the library building. 

Checklist for accessing the Library:

  • You are required to wear a face covering in UEA Library.
  • Book borrowing is via self-service. Please be aware that we are opearating a 48 hour quarantine on items returned to us, so if you have reached your borrowing limit you will need to return some items to us and then wait 2 working days before you can borrow again.
  • All book returns should be made to the external drop boxes outside the Library entrance.
  • Study spaces are in high demand and you may only use spaces marked with a green tick. Please ensure you follow all signage and guidance in the Library for the safety of yourself and others.


I've finished my degree but I still have books out on loan - what do I do?

If you completed your studies and you cannot come onto campus, as a temporary COVID-19 contingency, we are now offering a free postal book return service through DHL.  This service is offered to UK-based final year students and anyone with an expired library account.  For further information about the service and details of how to arrange collection of your items please click here.

If you are self-isolating please do not return your items until your self-isolation period is complete. Please contact us if you are a finalist so we are aware.

In order that Library materials are available for the new academic year, you will be invoiced for the replacement cost of anything which remains on your account after 21st September 2020.  This will be subject to a non-refundable processing charge of £5 per item, with a maximum of £10 in processing fees per invoice. Please contact if you will be unable to arrange return of your items by this date.
