Consultancy and Professional Training

The School of Global Development has a long history of staff applying their research knowledge to the targeted consultancy requirements of a range of international development clients since its foundation in 1967.

Drawing on many years of research in areas such as gender, education, climate change, governance, applied micro- and behavioural economics, global environmental justice, and water security, our academics are well placed to work with national and international institutions as advisers, team leaders, and researchers. In 2009, our School won a Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education for pioneering research that contributed to alleviating poverty in developing countries through environmental sustainability.

Providing specialist advice is a key feature of our consultancy activity. This could be on a particular area of work, for example: girls' education; payment by results; the effects of protracted conflict on water security; analysis of local shock responses in emergency contexts; or gender and migration. We also give guidance and training on methodologies for research and training. Activities we have been contracted to do include developing methodologies and work plans for project reviews, training local staff in data collection and analysis, undertaking quantitative and qualitative (impact) evaluation and assessments, systematic reviews and meta-analyses and providing strategic thinking and guidance.

Clients we have worked for include: the Department for International Development (DFID) and other bilateral and multilateral donors; agencies within the UN and CGIAR systems (for example: UNITAR; UNICEF; WorldFish; and IFPRI); the World Bank; International Non-Governmental Organisations such as Save the Children and OXFAM; international consultancy companies; and organisations working to address poverty in the UK.
