Key Research Interests

My research interests focus on the use of qualitative approaches to illuminate the experience of healthcare by patients and their families. As a nurse I strongly believe that it is short-sighted to exclusively focus on the eventual outcome of healthcare at the cost of paying any attention to the journey that leads there. For this reason my interest does increasingly focus on the application of qualitative methods to enhance medical intervention trials.

Current and completed research includes:

Total Ankle Replacement Versus Ankle Arthrodesis (TARVA): A pragmatic RCT to assess clinical and cost effectiveness, with an internal feasibility phase.(2013-2018)

The effects of and patient attitudes to gastric banding in private and NHS patients (2010-2013).
The treatment of benign joint hypermobility in children (2010-2013)

Treatment of depression in stroke patients and their carers (2009-2012).

Parents giving consent for their children to undergo surgery (2008-2010).

The families view on early discharge of children following appendicectomy (2004-2007).

Nurse prescribing in the United Kingdom: (2005).

The views of senior nurses on the required genetics knowledge for nurses (2004).

The provision of primary healthcare for hard-to-reach groups (2002 to 2004).
