Renaissance war poetry and its discontents

Prof Matthew Woodcock - School of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing

Lecture Theatre, Julian Study Centre, UEA

Although literature by combatants from the First World War has long had a place in the popular consciousness and in school and university curricula, far less attention has been paid to writings produced by practitioners and exponents of the Renaissance art of war. This lecture by Prof Woodcock explores the complicated relationship between arms and the arts, both in Tudor and Stuart England, and in the twenty-first-century academy.

Inaugural lectures recognise and celebrate the promotion of UEA academics to the position of professor, whilst giving audiences the chance to hear about their research and its impact on society. These lectures are free and open to all, and there's no need to book; simply turn up on the night, or watch live via YouTube. Each lecture is followed by a free drinks reception, with a chance to meet the speaker and ask them questions about their research.
