Biography

Richard is a senior research associate in the School of Environmental Sciences, specialising in a wide varity of catchment science research. Richard currently works on the DEFRA funded River Wensum Demonstration Test Catchment project which aims to evaluate the extent to which on-farm mitigation measures can cost effectively reduce the impact of agricultural pollution on river ecology whilst maintaining food production capacity. Richard's research has included work on nitrogen and phosphorus enrichment, pesticides, biobeds, cover crops, reduced tillage regimes, indirect nitrous oxide emissions, invasive signal crayfish and sediment fingerprinting.

Key Research Interests

Richard completed his PhD in 2015, titled "Advancing methods for quantitatively apportioning the sources of sediment in rivers: combining spectroscopy and stable isotopes with Bayesian mixing models". This research involved the advancement of three key areas of existing sediment fingerprinting practice. Firstly, a coupled X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRFS) and diffuse reflectance infra-red Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) approach was developed to rapidly, accurately and non-destructively analyse sediment geochemistry directly from sediment covered filter papers at masses as low as 3 mg.  Secondly, an improved Bayesian source apportionment mixing model was developed which enables full characterisation of spatial geochemical variability, instrument precision and residual error, to yield a realistic and coherent assessment of the uncertainties associated with sediment fingerprinting estimates. Lastly, a novel, coupled molecular and δ2H and δ13C compound-specific isotope analysis of leaf wax n-alkane biomarkers was developed to apportion the sources of plant-specific organic matter contributions to streambed sediments. Collectively, these three key developments significantly advance sediment fingerprinting research by enabling organic and inorganic fluvial sediment fractions to be quantitatively apportioned at both low- and high-temporal resolution within realistic levels of uncertainty, thereby enhancing our understanding of sediment dynamics under a range of instream hydrological conditions.

 

This research forms part of a much wider research project, the River Wensum Demonstration Test Catchment (DTC). This Defra funded initiative is working in three UK catchments (Avon, Hampshire; Eden, Cumbria; Wensum, Norfolk) to evaluate the extent to which on-farm mitigation measures can cost-effectively reduce the impacts of diffuse water pollution on river ecology while still maintaining food production capacity. As part of this project, Richard has investigated the effectiveness of biobeds at degrading waste pesticides, cover crops at reducing nitrate leaching, reduced tillage at improving soil health, and sediment traps at reducing river turbidity. Richard has also explored the impact of invasive signal crayfish on water quality, and investigated indirect fluxes of nitrous oxide (N2O) emitted from agricultural rivers and subsurface drainage systems, with signficant implications for climate change research.

 

Prior to this, Richard spent two years working in the field of dendroclimatology, producing a 1000-year long reconstruction of East Anglian precipitation from the ring widths of both living oak trees and medieval wooden buildings. This reconstruction subsequently fed into a much larger European-wide drought atlas for the past millenium.
