Biography

Welcome to my UEA biography. I am an archaeologist specialising in geoarchaeology, which focuses on an earth-science approach to archaeological investigation. Over the past 20 years I have had the good fortune to work on a diverse range of international archaeological projects at some of the world’s most significant archaeological sites, including Gordion in Central Turkey and Butrint in southern Albania. Here at the UEA I am involved in the archaeological applications of geophysical techniques, including input into taught courses such as Solid Earth Geophysics. I also undertake a number of freelance archaeological projects both in the UK and abroad.

Key Research Interests

My key research interests lie in the application of remote sensing techniques in archaeology and in the use of GIS technologies in reconstructing past landscapes. Past research has included the use of artificial neural networks for processing magnetic geophysical data and the development of cart-based magnetic surveying employing GPS technology. In the area of landscape archaeology I am particularly interested in the role of GIS in developing process-based models of palaeo-environmental change and in the establishment of high resolution chronologies for landscape change utilising volcanic tephra deposits. I am currently investigating the potential of archaeo-botanical records in elucidating the historic and prehistoric use of medicinal plants in North West Europe.

Current Research Projects

The Shinano and Chikuma River Valley Project, Japan. Salisbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures.

The Gordion Archaeological Project, Central Turkey. University of Pennsylvania.

Caistor Roman Town Project, Norfolk, UK. University of Nottingham.
