Biography

I completed my undergraduate degree in Meteorology and Oceanography at the University of East Anglia, followed by a PhD studying the dynamical ocean component of the Madden-Julian oscillation, which I completed in 2012. Since then I have worked on the EU GROOM (Gliders for Research, Ocean Observation and Management) project, within which I have been studying equatorial ocean Rossby waves from Seaglider data in the Indian Ocean. My research interests are focussed on the dynamical interactions between components of the climate system, particularly the oceans, atmosphere and ice.

Key Research Interests

I am currently a postdoctoral researcher studying the impact of ocean variability on ice sheet melt around Antarctica, as part of the NERC iSTAR project (http://blog.antarctica.ac.uk/istar/). The west Antarctic ice sheet is melting at an alarming rate and is potentially unstable since the bedrock is below sea level. A total collapse of this ice-sheet would raise sea level by around 5 m; although this is unlikely to occur during the next 100 years, there are very large uncertainties. The main supply of heat to drive melting comes from the ocean, so understanding how currents, eddies and mixing alter this supply of heat is crucial. To study this, I will be joining a research expedition to Pine Island Bay in early 2014 to take direct measurements using ship-based instruments and Seagliders.
