Biography

Amii Harwood (nee Darnell) is a Lecturer in Geography and GIS. She joined the Centre for Social and Economic Research on the Global Environment (CSERGE) in July 2010 as a geographical information systems (GIS) specialist. Amii’s main interests are in ensuring fitness for purpose in the digital representation of geographical phenomena.

Amii successfully defended her PhD thesis in July 2010 (University of East Anglia). Her PhD examined the use of GIS for hazard assessment, with particular focus on the uncertainties and sensitivities inherent to predictive spatial models. Amii also holds an MSc in Environmental Informatics (University of Leicester) and a BSc in Environmental Earth Science (University of Reading).

Key Research Interests

My research expertise is in quantitative geography, spatial analysis and GIS. I am concerned with spatial aspects of the two-way interactions between people and the biophysical environment.

My research focus is on the digital representation of geographical phenomena and issues surrounding fitness for purpose. I have explored pervasive and emergent geospatial research themes, such as error propagation and uncertainty, geographical representation and visualisation and, more recently, reconciling disparate sources of geospatial data.

Through collaboration and coordination of effort with fellow researchers, I have applied geographical skills to address problems with real-world relevance, for example, the potential for targeting land use policy to maximise nature’s benefits to society. As a Senior Research Associate I worked on the Defra-ESRC-NERC-funded UK National Ecosystem Assessment and its Follow-On project (http://uknea.unep-wcmc.org/).
