The high pressure laboratory is used for the routine measurement of seismic S and P wave velocities at confining pressures up to 0.4GPa as well as the simulation of pressure and temperature conditions relevant to volcanic magma chambers and conduits (T up to 900°C and P up to 0.2GPa).
The seismic pressure vessels may also be used with variable pore pressure and to measure other parameters such as electrical conductivity. Current facilities include:
- 2 rapid quench cold seal pressure vessels (currently under construction)
- high temperature chamber furnace
as well as all the equipment necessary to design and carry out high pressure experiments.
