Biography

Sue Cox is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Education and Lifelong Learning at UEA where she is involved in teaching and research. She has had a long career in Education, starting out with 12 years teaching mostly in Primary schools in the UK and also overseas. She entered Higher Education in 1985 where has worked continuously in undergraduate and postgraduate teacher education as well as research. She is committed to working with teachers on understanding practice in order to improve it and enhance the educational opportunities of children. At UEA she is course director of the MA (Advanced Educational Practice); module leader of the Art and Design element of the Primary PGCE course and course director of the MTL programme. Until recently she taught extensively on the Primary PGCE course (General Professional Studies and Art and Design). Both her teaching and research are informed by her background in philosophy of education: she studied for her MA in Philosophy of Education at the Institute of Education, University of London. As a member of publication board for The National Association for Education in Art and Design, she is on the editorial panel for The International Journal of Art and Design Education. She is a member the National Association of Primary Education, The Philosophy of Education Society and The Collaborative Action Research Network. At UEA she is a member of CARE. She has published work that supports teacher development in primary education and primary art and design teaching as well as work related to her research projects.

2002:

Cox, S. and Robinson Pant, A. (co-directors) (Funding: CfBT)‘Empowering Children through Visual Communication.’ This project explored how visual means could be used to improve communication, participation and decision making between children and between adults and children. Communication in school councils was the starting point.


2003:

Cox, S.(director) ‘Creative Partnership Project’ (Funding: Arts Council and DfES): ‘Exploring and Developing Alternatives to Linear Models of Curriculum Planning and Teaching in Primary Classrooms.’ This followed up her interests in children’s role in curriculum decision making, focusing on the development of a ‘process’ approach to planning, working to develop practice with a group of primary school teachers.


2004:

Cox, S. and Robinson Pant, A., (co-directors) Funding: CfBT: ‘Children Decide: power, participation and purpose in the primary classroom.’ The findings of the previous project, particularly around power relations, gave rise to this second project, which aimed for children and teachers to develop a more collaborative approach to making decisions.

Teaching Interests

Currently Sue Cox is course director ofthe MA (Advanced Educational Practice), working mostly with practising teachers engaging critically with their practice. She is module leader for several modules on this MA programme and for the Art and Design element of the PGCE course. She also teaches students currently completing the MTL course. She has contributed sessions to modules on the BA Education and MA Education (with a focus on critical engagement with educational practice).
