Union of UEA Students' receives landmark award

To celebrate UEA's 50th anniversary, the Annual Fund Disbursement Panel invited applications for a special one-off award of £50,000. The Panel, which is comprised of UEA alumni and University representatives, sought a project to fund that would have significant impact across the student body.  Following consideration of a number of strong applications from across the University, the Panel were pleased to award the funding to the Students' Union for their new Student Media Centre.

The award will provide new state-of-the-art equipment for student media societies; Concrete (UEA's official student newspaper), Livewire (the student radio station), and UEA:TV. In their bid for funding, the Students' Union demonstrated how the media societies were in desperate need of new equipment to help them provide the high-quality student journalism and entertainment services which UEA students expect and deserve.

New equipment to be provided includes:

  • A computer suite and industry leading software for the layout and design of Concrete.
  • A fully functional and modern radio station with an editing suite to produce accessible content for Livewire.
  • New video production software, as well as more cameras, microphones and lightning equipment to expand the work of UEA:TV.

With these new facilities the student media societies will not only be able to produce higher-quality content but they will be better able to equip their members with relevant skills to prepare them for future careers. Joe Levell, the Union's Finance Officer said it is, "a great opportunity to support all students interested and engaged in media societies to come together and have a higher impact on the student experience."

This award - the largest of its kind to date - would not have been possible without the generous donations of the many alumni and friends of UEA who give to the Annual Fund every year, both on a regular basis, and through the annual Call Campaign. The students would like to send their thanks to everyone who continues to support the future of the UEA student experience.
