This degree, offered by Norwich Business School (NBS), in the Social Sciences Faculty at UEA, will prepare you to work within businesses – in general management, consultancy, and the human resource function.

The course is designed to allow flexibility in what you study, while providing a clear focus on the realm of people management. People are often claimed to be a key source of competitive advantage in business, and through this course you will discover why this is the case and how people can transform organisations. You’ll also develop the skills necessary to manage people effectively in organisations, and get the chance to work socially with others on your course.

Assessment for Year 1

Within NBS, the assessment of learning generally comprises a mix of coursework and examination. For this degree, coursework will encompass individual and group-based assessment and target both theoretical and practical, skills-based learning. Formative and summative assessment will include written essays, presentations, case studies, online tests, reports and practical management projects. Examinations will assess learning from both theoretical and practice perspectives.

At NBS, feedback is viewed as a significantly important mechanism for student engagement and future learning. You will be given feedback via a variety of approaches depending on the nature of assessment, though it will be prompt, accessible, developmental and future-oriented.

Structure

At NBS, all our BA degrees share a common first year. This structure means that you’ll get a broad view of business, and can be confident you are on the right course for you. As you progress through your degree you will specialise and tailor your studies to the areas that you find most interesting and that are most relevant for your career goals.

Across six fascinating core modules you’ll explore the essentials of contemporary business. You’ll study themes about the business environment, principles of marketing, accounting and finance, managing data in the digital world, and managing organisations. You’ll also undertake an applied business project which will give you your first experience of independent learning and an opportunity to explore a topic that interests you.

By the end of your first year, you won’t just have a firm foundation of your chosen subject, you’ll understand all the key disciplines of business. Throughout your future career you are likely to work closely with these disciplines, so this understanding is extremely valuable. Being able to communicate with and understand other disciplines is a crucial part of management.

In this module, you will have the opportunity to explore these questions and many more in the fascinating area of management and organisations. If we want to know what a business is, we have to start with its purpose. And the purpose must lie outside the business itself. In fact, it must lie in society, since a business enterprise is an organ of society.” These wise words were not some modern reaction against capitalism but were said by Peter Drucker in 1955. Yet some business people struggle with this central idea, running transactional businesses instead of building purpose driven businesses even when purpose driven businesses are likely to be more successful. As a business leader you will have power and influence and it is important that you use these powers wisely. How can you improve peoples’ lives? How can you make a better society? How can you build a purpose driven business? In this module you will spend time exploring problems in society before identifying a problem and creating a business solution to that problem. This module is jointly created with Tomorrow’s Company, a leading think-tank in this area, and this will be a great module for you to talk about in subsequent job interviews.

MANAGING DATA IN A DIGITAL WORLD

This module is about how data is central to business and to the academic study of business. This module will explore what is meant by data, the variety of forms that data takes, and the origin and lifecycle of data. The module considers the tools that organisations use to gather, store and manipulate data, including the use of spreadsheets. The module will introduce basic statistical concepts used in business research. Finally, the module will explore the interpretation of data in business and research contexts.

This module is a general introduction and foundational grounding to Marketing. It is concerned with marketing functions of an organisation and seeks to develop awareness and understanding of marketing as an integrated and business activity. This module helps you to explore the dynamic and ever-changing world of business and provides insights into the managerial role. Understanding the Business Environment explores key environmental drivers and the basic functions of organisations. It is designed to provide essential core knowledge for Year 1 Business students on how organisations are managed in response to changes in the business environment and what is the role of its functional divisions in implementing strategic responses. In addition, the module also explores some of the current issues faced by organisations such as sustainability, corporate social responsibility and internationalisation. Core business theory is introduced in lectures and applied practically with the use of examples in seminars. By the end of this module you will be able to understand and apply key business concepts and a range of analytical tools to explore the business environment. Introduction to Business facilitates study skills development that is essential across all three years of the undergraduate degree by developing academic writing, presentation, team working and communication skills effectively.

This module is for students that are not on the Business and Human Resource Management Course. If you become a manager of people, how will you look after those in your team, department or wider organisation? Will you seek to empower, encourage and energise your staff? How will you deal with conflict and management control? In this module you’ll have the chance to examine a range of approaches to managing people across a variety of organisational contexts and issues. By doing so, you’ll discover valuable insights into the way that organisations work and the impact that different human resource management approaches can have on organisations, people and business. We begin by learning about the strategic significance of human resource management for competitive advantage; and particularly the processes used to recruit, reward and retain the staff your organisation needs. We will also explore contemporary issues about managing employees against a background of change and internationalisation. On successful completion of the module, you’ll have gained insight into the ways that organisations deal with their workforce. You’ll have developed skills and knowledge that will help equip you for future management practice. And you’ll learn useful lessons about job markets and how to get and grow in the job you desire.

STRATEGIC AWARENESS AND ANALYSIS

Strategy comes first; all other aspects of business will follow. Delivering a strategic plan is one of the most important things any firm, regardless of size can undertake.  A well-formulated and executed strategy establishes the foundations against which the organisation can create, monitor and measure their success. And yet many people find strategy and its purpose difficult to articulate. In this module you will use theoretical frameworks, along with investigation of the real world allowing you a clearer perspective of what strategy really is and why it is critical to your leadership and your success. The emphasis will be on analysing the context of strategy, considering both external and internal environment of the firm. Does the context determine what the strategizing manager must do, or can the manager actually shape the context? After understanding the strategy context, the discussion will be focused on strategy content / strategy choices. What are the different level of strategies? How firms make strategic choices? How these choices makes sense in context to direct and indirect competition around the firm?

How do we know what is morally right and wrong in business? What new and complex ethical issues are raised by the globalisation of business? Questions like these are central to this module. In this module you will learn about the nature, applications and consequences of ethics in business. You’ll discover why individuals sometimes make unethical business decisions. You will learn to use theoretical tools that help you to identify and analyse key ethical problems associated with business practice. You will also gain knowledge of practical approaches for managing business ethics in organisations. This module is ideal for those with an interest in corporate responsibility and sustainability. You will begin with an overview of what business ethics is and why it is important. You will go on to master the major ethical theories and concepts that form the core of business ethics. You’ll then build on these foundations to explore important business ethics issues – examples could include whistleblowing, environmental sustainability, corporate influence and/or others. You will discover how to use ethical theories to gain an in-depth understanding of whether, and to what extent, such issues are ethically problematic. You will also gain hands-on experience of applying ethical theories to business scenarios through a range of activities (e.g. role play, small group exercises, case study). You will discover the range of activities and tools which is available to marketing managers from traditional advertising and public relations (PR) to the more up-to-date product placement and social media. You’ll look at the issues that arise in planning, implementing and managing Integrated Marketing Communications - IMC - campaign. These include print and broadcast advertising, PR, sponsorship, product placement, sales promotion, experiential and event-marketing as well as direct and digital marketing.

ECONOMICS FOR BUSINESS

In today’s global, rapidly changing knowledge-based economy, learning and experimenting with employable and creative skills is one of the smartest investments that one can make for their future career. The overall aim of the module is to encourage students to develop key employability skills that will stand them in good stead for a future career. The module will put the student right in the centre of their own learning and engagement with an array of developmental activities designed to develop themselves and their future careers. Students will find opportunities to practice skills such as communication, leadership, creativity, design thinking, and problem solving relevant to the expectations of graduate employers. The module also involves the development of practical employable skills including preparing CV, writing a cover letter, and preparing for job interviews. The module draws from an interdisciplinary perspective to understand career success, self-making and personal branding. It will build on foundational concepts and skills in career development from across disciplines, including psychology, business, design thinking, entrepreneurship, and employability. It is designed as a learning environment and a management trainee program that focuses on the development of knowledge and skills for students interested in distinctive career success in a rapidly changing world. A core belief underlying our approach, demonstrated in interactive sessions, stems from the Chinese proverb, “Tell me and I forget. Show me and I remember. Involve me and I understand.” Students will have intensive brainstorming sessions, professional development workshops and training programs to develop and apply professional skills for their careers.

BEGINNERS' FRENCH I - A1 CEFR

Bonjour, comment ça va? Do you want to understand what this means and how to say it? This module will help you to master basics of French language and communication. This module is perfect for you if you have never studied French before (or have very little experience of it). Throughout the semester, you’ll develop reading, listening, speaking and writing skills at the A1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This means that you will learn to communicate about yourself and your immediate environment in a set of concrete, everyday situations. You’ll be taught in a very interactive and friendly environment, and will often work in pairs or small groups. Your two-hour seminar will focus on listening, reading and writing skills, while the oral hour will help you to develop your confidence in speaking. We’ll tackle some grammatical notions in class, but always as a means for you to improve your communication skills. You’ll also have opportunities to explore aspects of the cultures where French is spoken thanks to the various documents we will use to develop your linguistic skills (songs, podcasts, leaflets…). You’ll be assessed by two course tests: the first will cover listening, reading, and writing skills and the second will cover your speaking skills. On successful completion of this module, you’ll be able to understand and use familiar everyday expressions aimed at both the satisfaction of concrete needs, or those used to describe areas of most immediate relevance. You’ll be able to introduce yourself and others, ask and answer questions about personal details, and interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly. Please note that students should not have a level of French that exceeds the level of this course. This module is probably not appropriate for you if you have a recent French GCSE at grade C or above, if you have studied French abroad, or if you have learnt French in an informal setting (such as in your family). BEGINNERS' GERMAN I - A1.1 CEFR

Have you ever wished you could order your mulled wine at the Christmas market in German? How would it feel be to be able to introduce yourself in German or survive a basic conversation in the language? Or do you simply want to understand what makes the Germans, the Austrians, or the Swiss tick? These questions highlight the central learning achieved within this module. Our beginners’ course in German is perfect if you have or no prior knowledge of the language. You will gain the confidence to use German in basic conversations as you develop a first understanding of German sounds and essential grammar. You will build up a bank of key vocabulary to survive in real-life situations. You will also gain a greater awareness of German traditions and ways of thinking to help you make sense of a country that is deeply rooted in the heart of Europe. In a relaxed environment you will participate in classroom-based activities, working in pairs and groups to try out and be creative with new sounds, words and phrases. The fun of language learning will never be far away and promises to give you the confidence to make the first steps in German. As well as speaking and listening to each other you will discover the joy of understanding an authentic German text and to write an amazing first paragraph in German. BEGINNERS' SPANISH I - A1 CEFR

Do you want to learn a new language? Do you want to access the Spanish-speaking world? Are you about to travel through Spain or any Spanish-speaking country in Latin America? Then, it´s the right time to enrol to Beginners´ Spanish I. This module will improve your academic education and will provide you with the confidence to advance towards intermediate and advanced levels. It sounds good, doesn't it? You will develop your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills and you will have the opportunity to receive personal feedback on all your efforts. You will take part in classroom-based activities, working in pairs and small groups exchanging ideas and supporting each other in the process of learning the language. You will also be able to focus on real life situations as well as the ability to communicate effectively in those situations. There will also be opportunities to explore aspects of the cultures where Spanish is currently the main language. By the end of this module, you will have the linguistic competence necessary to understand and use common, everyday expressions and simple sentences, to address immediate needs. If you have a recent Spanish GCSE grade C or below, or an international equivalent, then this module is appropriate for you.

BEGINNERS' ARABIC I

This course is a pre-requisite to the study of Arabic language. You will master the alphabet: the script, the sounds of the letters, and their combination into words. You are introduced to basic Arabic phrases and vocabulary to help you have introductory conversations. You will develop essential speaking, listening, reading and writing skills as well as a solid understanding of the structure of the language in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). Some aspects of the Arab world and culture(s) are covered.

INTRODUCTION TO BRITISH SIGN LANGUAGE I

How would you converse with someone who is deaf? At work? In school? In an emergency? How can you avoid typical faux pas due to ignorance of a different culture? Can a 'signed'/'visual' language 'convey as adequately' as a 'spoken' language? These questions highlight the central learning achieved in this module. This is a course in British Sign Language assuming no prior, or minimal knowledge of the language. Throughout the course you will discover aspects central to the Deaf World and its Culture, and how to communicate through a unique 'visual' language, a language that uses your hands and body to communicate! Teaching and learning strategies involve signed conversation (from early on), role-play, and lots of games and exercises that make a truly 'fun and enjoyable' module to take. You will learn a little about the history of the Deaf and Sign Language itself, and its long battle to be recognised. You will discover how using your body and hands can be an exciting and meaningful way of communicating. You will acquire a wide range of easily usable vocabulary, a deeper look into various features that make the language unique, and very different to spoken languages. On successful completion of this module you will have developed knowledge and skills that will enable you to communicate with a Deaf person. You will be able to take your British Sign Language studies onto the next level, broadening your knowledge and developing further, the skill within this amazing 'Visual' language. Please note that very occasionally subsidiary language modules may be cancelled due to low enrolment. BEGINNERS' GREEK I - A1 CEFR

Greek is one of the official languages of the EU and is spoken by about 11 million people in Greece, Cyprus, and in various communities throughout the world. You will be surprised by the number of Modern Greek words that are already familiar to you, including scientific and technical vocabulary. Greek also opens the door to a unique and fascinating culture. UEA is one of the few British Universities offering Modern Greek, so stand out from the crowd and go for Greek. If you have little or NO prior experience of Greek, then this module is for you. You will develop your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. The aim is to equip you with the linguistic understanding of a number of real life situations, as well as the ability to communicate effectively in those situations. There will also be opportunities to explore aspects of the cultures where Greek is spoken. Particular emphasis will be placed on acquiring a sound knowledge of grammar. BEGINNERS' JAPANESE I

This is a beginners’ course in Japanese assuming little or no prior experience or knowledge of the language. In this module, you’ll learn reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. You’ll gain the linguistic understanding of a number of real life situations, as well as the ability to communicate effectively in those situations. There will also be opportunities to explore aspects of the cultures where Japanese is spoken. Particular emphasis will be placed on your acquisition of a sound knowledge of grammar. Please note that this is a subsidiary language module. Very occasionally, subsidiary language modules may need to be cancelled if there are low levels of enrolment. BEGINNERS' RUSSIAN I - A1 CEFR

Winston Churchill once said that ‘Russia is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma’. Russia gave the world Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Shostakovich, Chagall and borsch! Would you like to know more about the largest country in the world and unwrap some of the mysteries of its history, culture and politics through its language? This is a beginners’ course in Russian assuming little or no prior experience or knowledge of the language. In the first week you’ll acquaint yourself with the Russian alphabet (it’s not that different) and learn to read Russian. At the end of the course you’ll know all the basics of Russian grammar, will be able to read simple texts and to use your speaking skills in real-life situations (in case you find yourself lost in Red Square)! You’ll participate in classroom-based activities, often working in pairs and groups exchanging ideas and supporting each other in your exploration of the language. You’ll be able to improve and develop your grammar and vocabulary skills through watching Russian films, reading newspaper articles and short stories, discussing their content and expressing your opinion. Having a Russian language course on your CV will give you an advantage over other graduates, and it will also provide work opportunities in Eastern Europe, Russia and the countries of the former Soviet Union. This course will also help you to become a more informed global citizen whatever your specialisation or area of interest. Please note that you should not have a level of knowledge in Russian that exceeds beginners’ level when enrolling on this course, or you may be asked to withdraw from the module (at the Teacher’s discretion). The four elements you will study in this intermediate French module are: Listening Comprehension, Writing, Translation and Grammar. While the emphasis is on comprehension, the speaking and writing of French are also included. You should have pre A level experience (or equivalent) of French and wish to develop this to a standard comparable to A2 in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). You should not have a level of French that already exceeds the level of this module and should not have already studied AS or A level French/Baccalaureate/Level B1 in the CEFR.

INTERMEDIATE GERMAN I - A2+ CEFR

This means that you’ll be able to cope in a number of situations, including some you may encounter when travelling. You’ll be able to talk and write about yourself and your immediate surrounding environment in some detail, and you’ll work on handling short social exchanges. You’ll be taught in an interactive and friendly environment, and will often work in pairs or small groups. Your two-hour seminar will focus on listening, reading and writing skills, while the oral hour will help you to develop your confidence in speaking. We’ll tackle some grammatical notions in class, but always as a means for you to improve your communication skills. You’ll also have opportunities to explore aspects of the cultures where French is spoken, thanks to the various documents we will use to develop your linguistic skills (songs, podcasts, short articles and videos…). How would you converse with someone who is deaf? At work? In school? In an emergency? How can you avoid typical faux pas due to ignorance of a different culture? Can a 'signed'/'visual' language 'convey as adequately' as a 'spoken' language? These questions highlight the central learning achieved in this module. This is a course in British Sign Language assuming no prior, or minimal knowledge of the language. Throughout the course you will discover aspects central to the Deaf World and its Culture, and how to communicate through a unique 'visual' language, a language that uses your hands and body to communicate! Teaching and learning strategies involve signed conversation (from early on), role-play, and lots of games and exercises that make a truly 'fun and enjoyable' module to take. You will learn a little about the history of the Deaf and Sign Language itself, and its long battle to be recognised. You will discover how using your body and hands can be an exciting and meaningful way of communicating. You will acquire q wide range of easily usable vocabulary, a deeper look into various features that make the language unique, and very different to spoken languages. Greek is one of the official languages of the EU and is spoken by about 11 million people in Greece, Cyprus, and in various communities throughout the world. You’ll be surprised by the number of Modern Greek words that are already familiar to you, including scientific and technical vocabulary. Greek also opens the door to a unique and fascinating culture. UEA is one of the few British Universities offering Modern Greek, so stand out from the crowd and go for Greek. If you have a GCSE grade C or below (or equivalent experience, i.e. Beginners Greek I) this module is for you. The module has three contact hours per week. Winston Churchill once said that ‘Russia is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma’. Russia gave the world Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Shostakovich, Chagall and borsch! Would you like to know more about the largest country in the world and unwrap some of the mysteries of its history, culture and politics through its language? Before enrolling on this course you’ll need to be acquainted with the Russian alphabet, able to read and write in Russian, and to know a few initial items of grammar and vocabulary (skills that will be learnt in the Beginners' Russian I module). The emphasis is mainly on strategy process, embracing the challenges in implementing strategy at different levels in an organisation. In the first instance the module is concerned with broader themes related to the global business context. In addition, the module tackles international dimensions of HR and specific issues related to global staffing and mobility. In addition to the pre-requisite rules, this module is for students that have achieved at least 60% for their Second Year stage average mark. This module will give you the opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge in one of two ways. You may either: Undertake an academic-style piece of research and write a dissertation; Or, assemble a work-based project on behalf of a private, public or voluntary sector organisation where you have worked during your ‘Year in Industry’. Whichever is the chosen basis for your dissertation/report, this is to be undertaken as an independent research project. This module can be viewed as the culmination of your previous years of study which combines and enhances the skills and knowledge that acquired during your degree programme. During the module you will develop the skills and knowledge required to be an accomplished researcher and conduct your own independent study with appropriate supervision. Shopper marketing is concerned with the factors that influence buyer behaviour where it matters most – at the point of purchase, in-store or on-line. These factors are referred to as situational factors and relate to the individual shopper, the environment (store or website), the buying goals (self or other-orientated), and the shopping mission (routine repeat purchase, or special occasion). This module explores the way in which retailers and manufacturers work together to influence, anticipate and meet the needs and wants of distinct shopper segments through the manipulation of the retail environment, the marketing mix and the supply chain. As such, it will be appeal to business management students with an interest in marketing, retailing, operations management and consumer behaviour but also students from other disciplines with an interest in sustainable consumption and the design of interventions (policies and practices) that influence buyer behaviour.

RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS REGULATION: HOW TO COMPETE AND TRADE FAIRLY

This module gives students a unique insight into competition and consumer policy in the UK and the EU. Awareness of these policies is indispensable to the prudent operation of any business, especially knowing that the lack of compliance with these policies cost billions of pounds to businesses every year. NBS students are in a unique position to learn from members of the UK’s leading competition policy research centre and become familiar with the most pressing and topical competition and consumer issues of our times. The module is split into two parts. The first part focuses on competition policy, the aim of which is to promote competition in the marketplace; make markets work better and contribute towards improved efficiency in individual markets. We will examine the main components of competition policy and examine how they contributed to enhanced competitiveness of UK businesses within the UK and the global economy. In the second part of the module we will look at consumer policy, and how it ensures maximal consumer participation in markets, and discuss how these policies affect businesses in the UK and globally. The module is practice-driven and builds strongly on NBS research and research done at UEA’s Centre for Competition Policy. Students are expected to interact throughout the module, engage with our case studies, and contribute to the discussion of topical consumer and competition related issues. Throughout the module we rely on case studies that facilitate the understanding the anatomy of business behaviour relevant to competition and consumer policy. The module also contains, as a key component, information on how business can comply with the relevant laws and regulations governing competition and consumer policies.
