Pathophysiology examines the mechanisms that cause functional changes of body systems, either through disturbance of homeostasis or resulting from an abnormal syndrome or disease state.
The module compares nature-nurture perspectives on the health/illness continuum – an approach that you can apply to extend your understanding of holistic care and the rationale for healthcare interventions. The module will also include new knowledge of the human genome and molecular biology to deepen your understanding of the basis of clinical knowledge.
The module aims to facilitate your development as a practitioner who can a) critically analyse “holistic” care based on advanced physiological and clinical knowledge b) articulate and provide written evidence which demonstrates ability to critique academic resources in an intelligent and original way; c) synthesise ideas and demonstrate a knowledge base, which explores the boundaries of current thinking; d) hypothesise future advances in healthcare.
This module advances your professional development by drawing on the four pillars of advanced practice: management and leadership, education, research and advanced clinical practice. It reinforces the core principle that advanced practice is a level of practice rather than a particular role.
