Module Overview / Introduction

This module aims to build in-depth knowledge, understanding and skills applied to all aspects of the stoma care specialist nurse role. You will critically evaluate and reflect on your own professional responsibilities, the context in which you practice and the diverse and complex needs of the patient populations you serve. Varied and innovative teaching and learning methods aim to develop your critical thinking, communication skills, problem-solving and decision-making appropriate, and directly applied to, an advanced level of stoma care nursing practice. This module advances your professional development by drawing on the four pillars of advanced practice: management and leadership, education, research and advanced clinical practice. It reinforces the core principle that advanced practice is a level of practice rather than a particular role. The module was developed in close collaboration with the Association of Stoma Care Nurses (UK) and offers five places per year funded by the Ileostomy Association.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module you will have the ability to:

Apply enhanced knowledge and understanding of the diverse and complex pathways of care through which patients present for stoma forming surgery to critically evaluate how this informs each individual’s unique care needs.
Critically reflect on how your own values can influence the therapeutic relationship you develop with patients and colleagues and your ability to exercise professional autonomy, accountability and responsibility within your role as a stoma care specialist nurse.
Apply advanced knowledge and skills specific to stoma care specialist nursing practice to understand and assess complex clinical problems, plan and implement appropriate evidence-based care interventions and evaluate their effectiveness.
Critically evaluate and implement policies, protocols and standard operating procedures within your scope of practice and identify areas of care for which guidelines and policies require development.
Use critical thinking to explore and analyse evidence to enable a high level of judgement and decision making.
Act as an experienced work based learning educator by developing and facilitating the use of educational materials for students, staff and service users, assessing competence in stoma-related care practices and critically evaluating learning environments in which stoma care nursing is conducted.
Develop knowledge and critical understanding of enhanced decision making, reflecting on how they can be applied to support your professional competence and relationships.
Develop knowledge and critical understanding of shared leadership, reflecting on how they can be applied to support your professional competence and relationships.
Use enhanced knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice of advanced communication to address the holistic care needs of people who are preparing for and living with a stoma.

40 credits = 400 effort hours
At least one study day per 2-week block of learning

2000-word assessment of practice portfolio
4000-word evidence-based case study

Practice-based supervision and assessment is required by a suitably qualified and experienced practitioner who has completed UEA Practice Assessor Training or equivalent
