Applications are invited to the School of Engineering, University of East Anglia, for a PhD in the field of optical fibre sensors based on nanostructured coatings.
This is a novel and timely PhD proposal focused on enabling a new, resilient, reliable and environmentally responsible approach to monitoring in situ challenging and key emerging contaminants in water. These compounds present a new global water quality challenge with potentially serious threats to human health and ecosystems .
Scientific knowledge and understanding of potential human and ecosystem health risks posed by emerging pollutants is still very scarce, as is understanding of their presence in water resources and wastewater and their pathways and accumulation in the environment. Most emerging pollutants are not regulated in environmental, water quality and wastewater discharge regulations. Hence, there is an urgent need to strengthen scientific knowledge and adopt appropriate technological and policy approaches to monitor these pollutants in water resources and wastewater, assess their potential human health and environmental risks, and prevent and control their disposal to water resources and the environment.
Consequently, the goal of this PhD proposal is the design, development and fabrication of cost-effective, rapidly-responding, highly sensitive and selective optical fibre sensors for the in-situ and continuous detection of challenging environmental targets in water sources.
