Climate change is the defining issue of our time.

Our researchers helped uncover humankind’s impact on our climate and pioneer our understanding of global warming.

Now we are in a critical decade and at UEA we're ushering in a climate of change to address the biggest challenge we face.

Our Research

Ever since the construction of the Global Temperature Record in 1982, UEA has been at the forefront of pioneering climate research. Tucked away in a seemingly quiet corner of East Anglia, our researchers’ studies have had a global influence on how the world understands and addresses the climate crisis.

Today the evidence informing everyone from the UNFCCC and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Greta Thunberg and the school climate strikers is supported by our science. And now we’re creating a practical action plan to tackle the climate emergency though initiatives like the Norwich Institute of Sustainable Development and the establishment of an Observatory for Climate Recovery. 

ClimateUEA, a university-wide initiative, brings all of UEA’s climate research and innovation activities together. The School of Environmental Sciences is internationally recognised for its interdisciplinary approach to research to understand 'the Earth, its life and its people and the interactions between them'.

Our people

Six of the University’s researchers, including Professor Corinne Le Quéré, were recently named among the world’s most influential climate change scientists - and they aren’t alone in their pursuit of a better world.

The issues are as individual as they are universal, as local as they are global - and our students, staff and graduates are doing their bit.

Prof Corinne Le Quéré, Prof Heike Schroeder and Asher Minns shared their views on COP26 at a recent Lasdun Lecture. They offered a glimpse of what happened behind the scenes and answered the question 'What comes next?'

Our Environment

Think global, act local - the core mantra of sustainability, and one we’re employing in our net zero vision for campus. We're aiming to be over 80% net zero by 2030, and not to rely on carbon off-setting in order to get there.

UEA is ranked among the world’s top 50 sustainable universities and our Green Flag-awarded campus is home to some amazing biodiversity, from kingfishers to red-listed wasps.

Our Community

We’re working with young people across the region to inspire, inform, and equip them with the tools they need to understand the complexities of climate change – and to help tackle it. 

Project Change is an exciting programme of climate change workshops, resources, and competitions for Years 6–13 and Level 3 Year 1. With economics, politics, science and literature explored by world leading academics, Project Change, its people and its projects are set to ignite action.
