About the BUILD Charity

BUILD is a Norfolk based, independent registered charity providing social, leisure and learning opportunities to people, (over the age of 16) with sensory, physical or learning disabilities.

Established in 1967, in Norwich, but now working countywide, we provide around 250 opportunities each year to people, young, and old, helping them access the kind of social and leisure activities, which most of us would normally take for granted. Last year we provided over 9,000 individual engagements.

Activities range from a weekly social club for adults to a range of sports and cultural activities that make the most of the Norfolk countryside and rich cultural heritage whilst encouraging the people we work with to be a constructive part of the communities where they live.  We also host two special nightclubbing events each month in Norwich and Kings Lynn and also provide learning and skills services, helping people with things like job-search, cookery, money management, travel arranging as well as actively encouraging volunteering, and providing work experience opportunities.

Our services are co-ordinated by a small professional team of employees and delivered by around 80 community based volunteers, around a quarter of which have disabilities themselves.

Why they're supporting the Award

'We are pleased to support the UEA Award as we recognise that it is the whole student that enters the community post-graduation, not just the qualification, and the UEA Award supports and recognises a holistic approach to personal development.'

James has been involved in two Gold Award panels so far and also provided feedback to many students at the Silver Level of the Award who have been particularly interested in careers in NGOs, the voluntary sector or community development areas.
