Want to become your own boss? Take a massive step forward with that business or venture idea with this creative and valuable one-week course for UEA students and graduates.

 

This interactive, workshop-based programme is for those who are interested in setting up their own commercial/social enterprise.

By the end of the course you will have:

  • Developed and tested your idea
  • Gained valuable skills and motivation to build your business
  • Developed the skills to create an effective business plan
  • Had the chance to put your skills into practice
  • Collaborated and networked with other entrepreneurial students and graduates
  • Pitched your idea for a chance to win a £250 Try it Award

The sessions will take place from 9am until 5pm each day. Bringing a packed lunch or money to purchase refreshments is recommended.

We will be joined by several start-up mentors, each bringing a wealth of business experience with them, who will be on hand to provide expert support and guidance throughout the course.

Monday 18 June - The Big Picture: how to make it happen

Looking to ignite your business idea? Unlock your inner innovator and think about the big picture! Create a vision for your venture, and start to create a model of how the business will operate and generate income. We will explore some creative tools to help you to map out that future and make it happen.

By the end of this session you will have:

  • A clearer vision of your business idea
  • Completed a draft business model canvas
  • Identified the values that you want to build your business on.

Tuesday 19 June – Is there a market for your idea?

Let’s get real. It may or not be a great business idea, but you don’t really know until you put it in front of real customers. This session will give you the tools you need to thoroughly research your market, understand your competitors, identify your niche and really get to know and understand those potential customers.

By the end of this session you will:

  • Know how to run a focus group, and have taken part in one
  • Put together a market research questionnaire
  • Know how to implement customer and desk research
  • Drafted a customer profile.

Wedneday 20 June – Marketing and Sales

Having a great product/service is one thing, but how do you get your first customers, and how do you get seen and heard in such a noisy world?

The session will cover promotion, branding and networking. We’ll also explore the power of online marketing, including social media and share some key sales tips. By the end of the session you should know how to excite potential customers and most importantly get the sale.

By the end of this session you will:

  • Have a better understanding of marketing and sales tactics
  • Know more about online and social media marketing
  • Identified your ideal price point
  • Drafted a marketing plan
  • Know how to excite potential customers
  • Be equipped with the tools to make the sale!

Thursday 21 June – Money Matters

Money is the lifeblood of any business, but for many of you starting up, you may not understand(or enjoy) looking at the finances.

In this session, we’ll introduce you to financial basics in an accessible and interesting manner.

With the knowledge and understanding of how your venture actually works, you will be able to make informed decisions, save money and maximise profits.

By the end of this session you will:

  • Understand the fundamentals behind your finances
  • Assess your options for bootstrapping/financing your business
  • Be able to create your own cash flow forecast.

Friday 22 June – Making It Happen

So you’ve explored different aspects of your idea: now it’s time to transform that dream into a reality. We’ll show you how to take those crucial first steps with a well thought out action plan, and explore how you can develop necessary partnerships and build your network.

Using all of your skills and knowledge accumulated over the week, you will now have the chance to pitch your idea, get feedback and you may even come away from this session with £250 to explore your idea further!

By the end of this session you will:

  • Understand the importance of networking and useful networking techniques
  • Promote your business with a snappy ‘elevator pitch’
  • Know how to equip yourself with a smart action plan.
  • Have pitched for £250 to explore your idea!
