During the week's work experience with the teaching technicians in the undergraduate preparation laboratory of the School of Biological Sciences, students follow a programme which first introduces them to core skills such as use of micropipettes, making up simple solutions and spread plating bacteria. In the following days they are able to apply these skills in DNA fingerprinting and gene transformation. They learn to use instruments such as the spectrophotometer and the microscope and are shown how these instruments are maintained. The constant theme is to put theory into practice in a fun way so that the students can grow in confidence of their own abilities.
