Your development in year one is based on preparation for the transferring up process and setting the basis for the development of your thesis. Courses on offer allow you to analyse and discuss your research approach within the wider context of the arts and humanities and, depending on your needs, acquire essential awareness of critical and ethical approaches as well as more practical information, such as tips for using archives and libraries effectively. You may not need all of the sessions on offer, but you are usually expected to attend one of the Methodology Seminars. Many of the practical skills courses are generic, interdisciplinary and in some cases at beginner level for students starting research in unfamiliar disciplines.
