Background

Roger Baines received his degree in French Studies from the University of Warwick, this was followed by several years living and working in Paris, notably for Marks and Spencer SA and Sock Shop SARL, and teaching English at the University of Nantes and the IUT de Paris. On returning to the UK, he obtained the Diploma in Translation from the Institute of Linguists and his PhD on the work of Pierre Mac Orlan from the University of Nottingham. Prior to coming to the University of East Anglia in 1996, he taught French Studies at the University of Reading.

Teaching

French for Business (Second year); Translation into English (Second year); Year abroad oral preparation (Second year); Performance: French Language and Theatre (First, Second and Final year); Translation Theory and Practice (Final year); Advanced Translation (French) (Final year); Translation in Context (MA); and MA in Applied Translation Dissertation supervisions.

Research

Research interests include the pragmatics of conflict language in contemporary spoken French and theatre translation in performance.

Theatre Translations

With Fred Dalmasso,- Executioner no. 14 (unpublished), translation of Adel Hakim's Exécuteur 14 ( Paris: Editions des Quatre-vents, 1996 ), performed at the Dublin Fringe festival and the UEA Drama Studio in 2002.

With Fred Dalmasso,- Revolver (unpublished), translation of 36 of J-P Pélaez's contemporary dramatic sketches collected in Le Barillet (Nice: Editions de la Traverse, 2001).
