Workshop on Pure Model Theory
University of East Anglia, Norwich, 4-8 July 2005.

Satellite meeting of the Newton Institute Programme
Model Theory and Applications to Algebra and Analysis

Organising Committee: David Evans (UEA), Dugald Macpherson (Leeds), Anand Pillay (Urbana), Frank Wagner (Lyon).

Themes: There is a rich interplay between the sophisticated and difficult techniques which have been developed internally within model theory (so-called 'pure model theory') and the model-theoretic analysis of individual (or groups of) mathematical structures which arise in algebra and analysis. This workshop will focus on developments at the 'purer' end of model theory, without, of course, ignoring the connections with other branches of mathematics.

The themes of the workshop will include: forking and simple theories; Hrushovski constructions; non-elementary classes; topological methods in model theory; independence in unstable structures.

Invited talks: There will be three sequences of tutorials given by

  • Itay Ben-Yaacov (Madison)
  • Ludomir Newelski (Wroclaw)
  • Bruno Poizat (Lyon).

Plenary speakers include:
  • John Baldwin (Chicago)
  • Elisabeth Bouscaren (Paris)
  • Byunghan Kim (MIT)
  • Chris Laskowski (Maryland)
  • Kobi Peterzil (Haifa)
  • Mike Prest (Manchester)
  • Boris Zilber (Oxford)
  • Martin Ziegler (Freiburg)

Other speakers include:
  • Alfred Dolich (McMaster)
  • Marko Djordjevic (Helsinki)
  • Assaf Hasson (Oxford)
  • Martin Hils (Paris)
  • Alexei Kolesnikov (Michigan)
  • Alf Onshuus (Bogota)
  • Nicholas Peatfield (Lisbon)
  • Ziv Shami (Urbana)
  • Alex Usvyatsov (Jerusalem)
  • Evgueni Vassiliev (Florida)
All participants are invited to submit a contribution to a Poster Session.

Location: The workshop will be held at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK. The cost of accommodation and meals from dinner on Sunday 3 July to afternoon tea on Friday 8 July is 325.50 pounds for en-suite and 264.50 pounds for standard accommodation.

Registration and further information: Participants are asked to register between 1 February and 13 May 2005. Details of how to register and of available funding can be found here. Inquiries about the Workshop should be addressed to the local organiser
