Energy Statistics

UK Energy Statistics and related information

Please note that the former Department of Trade and Industry (DTI),  its replacements firstly  the Department for Enterprise, Regulation and Reform (BERR), then subsequently BIS,  DECC (Department for Energy and Climate Change, and the Department of Transport (DfT)   have a habit of regularly changing their WEB Addresses.   For convenience, many of the key items of information are now hosted on the UEA Energy Statistics Page as well as the original sources.    Clearly those on the UEA site can only be updated infrequently and reference should be made to the relevant Government WEB Site. Only when the link fails and you have difficulty in tracing the replacement should you used the UEA version.   However, in some cases, aggregate files covering several years data have been compiled as a single downloadable file on the UEA Site.    A major revamp of this page will take place in Spring 2016

Energy Statistics [updated 23rd January 2016]

Digest of UK Energy Statistics (DUKES) hardcopies of previous years are available in the Library back to mid 1970s

Please note that the location of the various links on the Government Websites keeps changing every 6 – 12 months even when it is the same department.  As a consequence many of the following data sources were also downloaded onto the UEA Server on the date indicated above.

o    2015 DUKES home page on DECC Website – this provides access to EXCEL spreadsheets in the different energy sectors

o    UEA version of DUKES 2015 in pdf formatdownloaded on 23rd January 2016

o    Long Term Trends  (pdf)

o    EXCEL Versions of Tables    [ on DECC Website] you need to select the appropriate energy source in the table presented on the page linked.

Energy Trends:   This publication is produced 4 times a year and includes review articles on specific energy sources from time to time

Energy Flow Charts.    These were published every three years up to 2010 and thereafter annually:  The publication date is usually in July of the following year.  The latest Flow Chart for 2014 is shown in thumbnail below.  Previous versions are also available by clicking on the appropriate link..

·         For most fuels these are available at the NUTS4 Level - equivalent to the District Authority Level - see the map of Eastern Region Areas

·         Most of the files are in EXCEL format - however some are in PDF format - for the EXCEL files you may need to "Enable Macros" before you can read the file.

Gas Consumption by Post Code

For Gas, data were available at the Post Code level e.g. NR4 1 etc between 2001 and 2004, but please note:

o    The Post Codes are not always listed in alphabetic order (this if for reasons best known to National Grid Company)

o    To get the data separately for domestic or commercial and industrial you must multiply the figures by the factor appropriate to that region to get the value you want. These factors are included in the summary pages.

o    The information is based on modelled data and does not necessarily reflect actual data

Data for 2001

Data for 2002

Data for 2003

Data for 2004

Data by postcode after 2004 are no longer available as the information is now generated on a Mid Level Super Output Area (MLSOA) basis.

A full set of the data tables for 2008 was downloaded on 8th February 2009 and may be accessed as follows.   Please note for compatibility issues,  the data files are divided into three separate files.    All must be downloaded into a single folder and full access can be achieved automatically to all sections by opening PART1.   Please note, the files names of the EXCEL files must not be changed.    Also for the software to work,  MACROs must be enabled.

[√] UK Transport Statistics - 2008  - first part  covering chapters 1 – 5 [Note: This is a special data file containing all the tables from the Transport Statistics of Great Britiain 2008.  The original data files are scattered throughout the TSGB Statistical Pages and are not always easy to find.  This compendium is still under construction,  but the current status may been seen once the file is opened].   PLEASE NOTE that MACROS must be enabled for the database to be accessed.

·           EXCEL file  TSGB_2008_Part2.xls  covering chapters 6 – 9 inclusive
