|Research group||Biographical detail|
I was born in Australia, but went to university in Auckland, New Zealand where I did a PhD on the aqueous chemistry of sulphur dioxide in the atmosphere. Although I remain interested in atmospheric sulphur chemistry, I am currently concerned with the thermodynamics of the concentrated aqueous aerosol and in recent years this has been applied to organic materials with a special focus on humic like substances and airborne surfactants. I continue to be interested in long-term changes in urban air pollution and its effects on health and building damage. The historical aspects of this work formed the subject of a book, The Big Smoke and have recently focussed on Victorian and Edwardian Britain. My interest in material damage by air pollutants has not been restricted to outdoor environments. I have done some on the museum atmosphere and have a continuing interest in the process of damage to cultural materials by air pollutants and climate change. In recent years I have become intersted in communicating information about the atmospheric sciences to broader audiences. In 2005 I received a gold medal from the Italian Chemical Society for contributions in environmental and heritage chemistry and with the NOAHs ARK team the Europa Nostra Grand Prize for research in 2009. My involvement with SCOPUS has involved me in bibliomentric and citation analysis. I am a Professor in Atmospheric Chemistry at the School of Environmental Sciences, University of East Anglia. I was appointed senior editor of Atmospheric Environment. in 1990.

Sidelights: Answers given to a biographical reporter.(i) On teaching at University of the South Pacific
A highlight of my time in Fiji was the opportunity to teach elementary quantum physics to young local students. Questioning the nature of 'matter' and 'reality' seemed rather abstract tasks for them, but just occassionally we would all catch a glimpse of just how strange things really are, and wonder if the gods were playing some kind of huge joke on us.
(ii) On my book THE BIG SMOKE
I was a student in the sixties when it sometimes seemed that environmental issues were likely to be even more important than the war in Viet Nam. Background reading for my PhD suggested, in annoyingly brief and pretentious footnotes, that the environment had been getting worse since the 13th century, at least. I began to wonder what was so different about contemporary concerns, so my arrival in England allowed me wet Sundays among medieval documents. Here I sensed that throughout history we have found it easy to regard ourselves on the brink of an apocalypse. The present environmental crisis appeared to be part of the sequence of apocalyptic challenges humans are condemned to face. I find the historical perspective an antidote to enviromental gloom.
(iii) On POLLUTION AND ART
Environmental pollution is not merely a matter of environmental chemistry. The smells have to be smelt. Painting and poetry can be as informative as a scientific description when trying to understand the complexities of environmental problems. Recently I have been thinking much about the representation air pollution in cinema.
(iv) On CONTEMPORARY WRITERS
I admire detective writers; no crap and their hearts are in the right place. My title THE BIG SMOKE was meant resemble THE BIG SLEEP, so I was pleased when this academic book was reviewed as "reading like a thriller".
(v) On STYLE
Most of my writing is for academic journals which has led to a terse style. I aim at a fact per line rather than one per paragraph. It can be heavy going at times, but the reader certainly gets value for money. I hate punctuation and spell abominably.
