ENV3C62 Pollution Toxicology and Chemistry

A multidisciplinary unit concerned with problems that underlie the management of contamination and pollutants in the environment. It focuses on urban and regional issues and is concerned with pollution in the widest sense. It will unashamedly shift the viewpoint between chemical, legislative, economic, historical and social interpretations of pollution problems. Survivors of this unit will come to appreciate the necessity of a broad perspective of environmental problems.

The expectations of the course are high and the course graded work involves considerable effort. The journalistic essay involves creating an article for New Scientist, that interprets reacent advances. This is a difficult task, so we run a session on how this might be done. We are always happy to discuss any ideas or problems you have. In the past students have felt that although this is tough, it is worthwhile. The problem sheet contains three problems, but these demand extra thought and research. The good news is that you only have to do one!
