I am a Professor of Physical Oceanography in the School of Environmental Sciences at UEA, Norwich. I moved to UEA in 1989. My main research interests are in large scale observational oceanography. Regions currently being studied include the Southern Ocean, North Atlantic and the east coast of Greenland.

Previous projects have included WOCE Cruise A23 and ALBATROSS .

My research group currently consists of 6 PhD students and 1 postdoctoral researcher. Thirteen PhD students have completed their theses under my supervision.

A new project, ADELIE, is starting in 2006. The project involves a research cruise in February 2007 near the Antarctic Peninsula to undertake a CTD section, and deploy floats and drifters. Click here for a pdf describing the project, extracted from the grant proposal.

If you are interested in studying for a PhD with me, please send me an email. A couple of possible projects are listed below. If you have your own funding (perhaps from your own national funding), then you are welcome to apply at any time.
Mixing and water mass circulation near the Kerguelen Plateau, Southern Ocean
Global climate impacts of Southern Ocean water mass changes

I recently handed on the Chair of the International Antarctic Zone Programme (iAnZone) to Alex Orsi and Andrea Bergamasco. I am helping to plan the SASSI project for the International Polar Year.
