Introduction
The School of Social Work has a long history of supervising PhD and MPhil research degrees. The School is internationally renowned for its research and teaching in social work, social policy and psychology. In the recent Research Assessment Exercise ((RAE) 90% of the School's research was judged to be of 'international standing' with 55% judged as 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent'. PhD students can therefore be assured that their research training is being delivered in an academic department with an excellent reputation for its research.
The research degrees offered by the School of Social Work & Psychology are:
Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
MPhil students are registered for a maximum 2 years full-time or 4 years part-time. The degree is awarded on the basis of a maximum 65,000 word thesis and oral examination.
Doctorate (PhD)
PhD students are registered for a maximum 3 years full-time or 6 years part-time. Assessment is based on the production of a thesis of a maximum 100,000 words and oral examination.

The School also offers taught programmes of postgraduate study which offer a sound grounding in research methods training. These are particularly suitable for those needing to develop these skills to progress to PhD research:
- MA Child and Family Research (Social Work and Social Policy)

- MRes Social Science Research Methods (Social Work, Social Policy, and Psychology)

Research training and support
- Each research student has their own supervisory team which plays a vital role in the development of the research project. The supervisors work closely with their student throughout the period of registration.
- A research student group provides a focal point for research development and peer support.
- The School has a thriving postgraduate research community with full-time and part-time MPhil and PhD students from both the UK and overseas.
