Monday 17th July

5.30 pm – Opening reception in Norwich Cathedral

Norwich’s most famous building is its 900 year old Romanesque Cathedral. The opening reception for the conference will be held in the cathedral’s newly opened refectory. Wine, soft drinks, and canapés will be served. Delegates will then move into the cathedral nave at 6.30 pm for brief welcome words from the Conference Chair and the Vice Chancellor of the University of East Anglia, and for Professor David Howe’s keynote presentation on the topic of “Adoption: nature, nurture and narratives”. The event will finish at 7.30 pm and delegates are free to arrange their own evening meal in the city centre.

This opening event is included in the delegate rate. Accompanying persons are welcome to attend both the drinks reception and the talks in the Cathedral. The price per person is £12.

Wednesday 19th July

The academic programme finishes for the day at 3.30 pm and delegates and accompanying persons may spend the afternoon and evening as they wish, including choosing from three outings below:

Trip 1: A river boat trip, including dinner on board (£25 per person)

The Norfolk Broads – an interconnected network of rivers and small lakes (called ‘broads’) are a unique feature of the East Anglian landscape. This

trip departs from Norwich city centre on a ‘City Boats’ river cruiser. The boat travels through the historic heart of Norwich and out to the rural tranquility of Surlingham Broad. A buffet dinner will be served on board. Transport to and from the UEA campus by coach is provided. The coach will leave UEA at 4.15pm and the boat trip will begin at 5pm lasting 4 hours. The price of £25 includes coach to and from UEA, the boat trip and dinner. There will be a cash bar on the boat serving alcoholic and soft drinks.

Trip 2: Historic Blickling Hall and Gardens plus dinner in a traditional country pub (£35 per person)

Built in the early 17th century Blickling Hall is a lovely English mansion, set in beautiful parkland with a lake. The elegant formal gardens are at their most stunning in July. Blickling Hall is only 15 miles from Norwich.

The coach will leave UEA at 5pm. On arrival at Blickling Hall our party will have a private guided tour of the house and gardens. At 7.30pm we are booked in for dinner at the Buckinghamshire Arms pub – an old coaching inn adjacent to the Hall. This trip costs £35 per person which includes coach travel to and from Blickling, private tour of the house and gardens, and a two course dinner at the inn. The inn serves a wide selection of wines, English beers and soft drinks. We should arrive back in Norwich at about 10-10.30 pm and the coach will drop people at UEA and the city centre.

Trip 3: Traditional English Seaside – A visit to Cromer (£7 – coach only)

There is nothing the English like more in summer than a trip to the seaside. The town of Cromer became a popular seaside resort in the 19th Century. This trip involves coach travel only. The coach will leave UEA at 4pm arriving in Cromer (22 miles away) approximately 45 minutes later. It will depart from Cromer at 9pm and will stop at UEA and the city centre. In between delegates are free to explore all Cromer has to offer: the beaches, cliff walks, the Pier, town centre shops, cafés and restaurants. There are many places to eat and drink. For the authentic seaside experience we recommend a fish and chip supper from the renowned ‘Mary Jane’s’ – where a meal will leave you with change out of £5.

Thursday 20th July

Conference dinner and ceilidh band.

The conference dinner will be held in the Sainsbury Centre for the Visual Arts, on UEA Campus. This art gallery was designed by Sir Norman Foster, and its restaurant occupies one end of the beautiful open glass structure. The evening will begin at 7pm with a glass of sparking wine (or soft drink) and a three course sit down dinner will follow. After the meal the Ceilidh band ‘Mixed Bunch’ will provide music and dancing. Ceilidh (pronounced kay-lee) is a traditional form of social dancing originating from Ireland and Scotland. The band both provides the music and calls out instructions in the basic dance steps. It is great fun: everyone can join in – you don’t need a partner or to know how to dance.

The conference dinner is included in the delegate rate for all delegates (including non residential) except those on the ‘budget’ option. Tickets for these delegates and/or for accompanying persons can be purchased for £35 per person. This includes a welcome drink, 3 course dinner with wine or soft drinks, music and dancing.
