8 key questions to help choose the right university for you.
The Course
1. How is the course ranked?
League tables are helpful but only if used properly. Always read the methodology behind them so you know what they’re really ranking - some are focused on research, others on career prospects, but most look at a range of factors.
UEA is ranked in the UK Top 25 (The Times/Sunday Times 2020 and Complete University Guide 2020), and the World Top 200 Universities (The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020).
2. What’s the uni’s TEF rating?
T-E-what? TEF stands for the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), which assesses the quality of teaching in universities in England. Unis are awarded either gold, silver or bronze. This award tells you what kind of teaching to expect but they do not represent the university entirely - it’s better to consider it alongside other ranking factors such as league tables.

THE PEOPLE
3. Have you spoken to current students?
No one knows the uni better than those who are studying there. By asking them on online forums or at an open day, you’ll be able to find out what it’s really like on campus.
Student unions are run by students, for students and play a big part in improving the student experience on and off campus, so make sure you explore what they have to offer.

4. Have you visited the uni yet?
Most unis have websites with plenty of information but nothing beats attending an open day, either on campus or online. This is where you’ll get personal insights by asking staff and students questions.
Francesca Uragallo, recruitment events manager at UEA said: "Make sure you make the most of your visit by seeing as much as possible and attending at least two talks.”
THE LOCATION
5. Which do you prefer: Campus or city?
There are clear differences between the two. A campus university like UEA has everything you need within walking distance. You’ll find excellent facilities, study areas and the students union in close proximity. A city uni has these too but they’re usually spread out and located among shops, offices and restaurants. The former has a stronger student community feel but the latter will put you right at the centre of city.
Beth Bunn, student recruitment manager at the University of East Anglia (UEA) advises: "I’d recommend visiting at least one of each type to get a feel and see what’s right for you.”
6. Where will you live?
First-years usually get to stay in university halls. But with so many types available, how do you choose? Should you stay closer or further from campus? Do you want an en-suite bathroom or not? Then there’s no guarantee you’ll get your first choice either, so know your options well so you have several preferred and back-up options you know you can live with for the next year.

7. Are there funding opportunities?
Most unis have bursaries and scholarships - these go a long way in stretching your student budget!
UEA offers a bursary scheme and a range of scholarships.
For example, our bright spark scholarship is offered to students who do well in school or college and take a pre-university research project such as the EPQ. You may need to apply to receive these scholarships so make sure you check with the universities you’re applying to and confirm what you need to do.
8. What are the support services available?
Everybody wants to get the most out of their university experience. Adequate student support is crucial to this. Jane Amos, UEA’s head of student services said: “We found that nearly three quarters of undergraduates accessed our student support service at some point during their degree.”
