For student finance purposes, independent (mature) students are identified by meeting one or more of the following criteria; aged 25 or over at the start of the academic year; married before the start of the academic year; or having supported themselves for at least three years before the start of the academic year. If you are an independent student and single, your income will be assessed to see whether you are eligible for any maintenance grant. If you are an independent student and married or co-habiting, your partner's income will be assessed alongside your own.

For more information read our finance guide (PDF). The government's student finance pages can also provide more information and guidance.
