Module specific:

  • To provide an introduction to researching computing related problems: Gathering data, filtering irrelevant information, and collating relevant information into a coherent form.
  • To provide an introduction to group working: Dividing a large problem into smaller components, and then bringing together individual solutions to solve the problem as a whole.
  • To provide experience of presenting work orally to peers using formation presentations.
  • To gain experience of LaTeX and its use in writing formal technical reports.

Transferable skills:

  • Written communication - all assessed coursework will require a formal technical report.
  • Oral communication - students will be required to give short presentations as part of their assessment.

Subject specific:

On completion of this unit the students should:

  • Understand the nature of and problems associated with working in groups.
  • Understand what is required in a formal technical report.
  • Gain experience of LaTeX for typesetting technical documents.
  • Confidently create and deliver time-constrained multimedia presentations in a lecture theatre.

Teaching on this unit will largely be focussed around the assessed group exercises. The material will be delivered in the laboratory to demonstrate the ideas first-hand.
