Emmanuela
Law
Law
Hello, my name is Emmanuela Onyilofor, and I am an undergraduate student in my second year studying Law. I chose UEA because more than anything, I needed a place that I would feel comfortable and at home in, whilst studying a rigorous course like Law. I was therefore immediately attracted to the campus setting, with state of the art, modern accommodation and the homely community-like feel. I was also attracted to studying Law at UEA due to its high ratings in the field, an indicator of the faculty’s academic excellence.
I have had a wonderful experience so far at UEA. From the point I arrived, all the UEA staff were friendly and helpful – they did their best to be welcoming and help us all get settled in. Academically, my time here has been very productive as I’ve learnt to think about legal and socio-legal issues independently and at the same time focus on the aspects of Law that interest me the most due to the flexible nature of the course. The learning experience here has a very one-on-one feel because the lecturers are always ready to walk us through anything we do not understand, along with the buddy system and advisor meetings that have been put in place for smooth learning. In addition to this, we are provided with sessions that help in choosing a career path, as well as good study, time management and essay writing skills. At UEA there is someone to help with any difficulties at every step of the way.
Apart from this, the social life at UEA is very exciting. Students have a wide range of over 150 clubs and societies to chose from and become a part of. So far I have been part of the International Students Society, Law Society, Dance Squad, African Caribbean Society, Creative Writing Society and several others. I have met many interesting people from all over the world by doing so. There are also all types of socials, events and gigs that occur every week at the LCR on campus and at the Waterfront in town, both run by UEA’s student’s union. Norwich is a beautiful, relaxed city filled with plenty of culture and history to explore. My experience here altogether has been fulfilling, laid back and exciting all at the same time.

BSc Business Management
BSc Business Management
Hello, I am Abisola Akinsola, a third year undergraduate Business Management Student at the University of East Anglia. I have had and I’m still having a pleasant experience at the University although before my arrival, I was a bit sceptical about leaving home and living in Norwich alone and I did not know what to expect, but UEA surpassed my expectations.
When I arrived at the airport, a warm welcome was organised by the university to pick up international students and guide them through the process of getting their room keys, welcome packs and settle into their rooms. This was very helpful after the long journey from Lagos as student helpers were at hand with bus shuttles to help students carry their luggage to their rooms.
One of the things I like about UEA is that it is a single site campus and almost everything is available. There is a Union Food Outlet, cafeterias, a post office, banks, a travel shop, a sports park with world class facilities, it is all so convenient! There is also a direct bus service from campus to the city centre which is one of the main attractions in Norwich as it is one of the top ten shopping venues in the UK.
There are so many opportunities for students at UEA with an employability centre which helps students and graduates find jobs and volunteering opportunities both on and off campus and help build student’s CV’s so as to be attractive to employers after graduation. There are also religious facilities for students of all faiths; there is a UEA Islamic Prayer Centre on campus and a chaplaincy.
There is also a good avenue for socialising at the University through the different clubs and societies, so if you feel far from home, there is the African Caribbean Society and the Nigerian Students association at UEA. The university accommodation is very conducive for studying and convenient because it is easy to access all the facilities on campus. It is no wonder why I have stayed on campus all through my three years of study.
What really attracted me to UEA was its ranking for student satisfaction and with my experience so far, I am not the least disappointed. There is absolutely something for everyone regardless of where you come from!

PhD Development Economics
PhD Development Economics
Hi, my name is Blessing Akpan, and I am currently studying for a post graduate research degree, following the successful completion of my M.Sc degree in Finance and Economics.
In furthering my academic career, my decision to come and remain in UEA was based mainly on their obvious passion for excellence. They go beyond the ‘packaging’, to deliver substance, little wonder they are among the top for student satisfaction, academic relevance and overall institutional rating.
My experience in UEA, has indeed been life altering beautiful, the friendly nature of the people (staff and student alike) contributed to making my integration into the system easier, enhancing my overall development and productivity.
The tranquil yet vibrant city of Norwich, and its environs, provides enough outlets for entertainment and relaxation for whatever tastes available, from the flamboyant to the more mundane.
From my standpoint, University of East Anglia, Norwich checks all the boxes and is indeed the place to be.
Adanna Ohakim
BSc Biomedicine
BSc Biomedicine
I got admission here through the help of LGE in Lagos which most of you might know and up to the point I got here I kept wondering what to expect. I traveled down here on my own and the school had organized a warm welcome for international students at the airport.
UEA is a home away from home, it is ranked the highest when it comes to student satisfaction. It has an environment appropriate for everything as a student, from academics down to a good social life. What I found interesting about the academic system here is that every student is assigned a personal academic adviser and the staff are very friendly and always ready to assist you in any problem, which makes it easy to get very good grades. The good part is, after much school work there are loads of social activities to complement it organized mainly by the student union.
UEA is great place to be. It aims at training the whole being not just academically. There are a lot of clubs and societies one could enroll in for recreation and to get to know more about different cultures and so on. The sports park also offers a great workout facility as well as the chaplaincy, so no matter your religion, there’s always a place to fit in.
Food is not a problem here as the African market is just a direct bus away from the University. The African market has a lot of food to offer from pounded yam to plantain to palm oil and different ingredients for food and so on, so don’t worry about leaving home.

MA Development Studies
MA Development Studies
On the recommendation of Deby Okoh, the international liaison officer in Nigeria, I came to UEA to study for an MA in Development Studies.
I had no idea of what UEA or Norwich looked like but I was very optimistic and knew I made the right choice after the induction week.
UEA is ‘home away from home’ the atmosphere is entirely friendly. It boasts of a great campus with excellent learning facilities and contains all you can ever want in a university community; the accommodation is second to none.
The DEV lecturers are vast, experienced, insightful and above all approachable. I have met huge range of interesting people from all over the world. The cosy city of Norwich makes it more excellent for a balanced student life.
UEA enables you to Understand; you are Empowered to be able to Act, it brought out the best in me. I have been recommending it to my friends and will continue to do so. University of East Anglia, ‘it could be the making of you

MA International Relations and Development Studies
MA International Relations and Development Studies
Hello, I'm Esther. I bagged a master's degree in International relations and development studies from UEA in 2008 and I have absolutely no regrets. My one year at the University was one of the most enriching of my life and I have my friends who come from diverse backgrounds to thank, the hard work and thoroughness of my lecturers who took time to understand my background and one of the most conducive environments for learning to be grateful for.
Currently, I work with a news organisation on the foreign desk and the insight I have into issues affecting the world all come from interactive sessions in the classroom and with my many friends whom I had the privilege of learning of their countries first hand.
Norwich is one of the most compact cities in the UK to live in (this I found out by travelling over the summer holidays) as its big enough to explore and small enough to get everything in one place all at the same time.
I really enjoyed my stay at the UEA and I trust that if you do attend, you'll be as educated and enlightened as I was about the different peoples of the world.
ESTHER MAUPE OGUN
Chigozie
MA International Relations and Development Studies
MA International Relations and Development Studies
My name is Chigozie and I am a postgraduate student studying International Relations and Development studies at the University of East Anglia. Studying at UEA is one of the best experiences I have had in my over two decades of existence. At the beginning of my programme, as an International Student I thought it was going to be difficult integrating into the system, but to my greatest surprise it took less than two days. The Ice breaking party organised for the large community of international students in UEA made it very easy for most of us to get to know each other, I actually met most of my friends there. Choosing my modules from two different schools (Political, Social and International Studies and Development Studies) has been one of the most wonderful moves I have made towards the actualisation of my life dreams. These two schools are known for their good reputation and high standards. The school of Development is actually the best development school in the whole of the UK.
Living in the University accommodation with a variety of international students is an interesting experience every student should have. The presence of over fifty Nigerian students made me feel so much at home that I hardly miss home. One of my best moments is going to the multi million pounds Sportspark for my physical fitness exercise, you can’t imagine what the Olympic size swimming pool looks like, it’s absolutely amazing.
The friendly and always willing to help nature of lecturers in UEA has made me consider doing a PHD as soon as I finish my Masters. Worthy to mention is the job experience I have acquired as a student ambassador and student mentor at the same time; to be frank I have no regrets choosing UEA as my school of study.
For those who enjoy participating in social activities, I think UEA is the right place for you, be rest assured you will always have varieties of activities especially at the LCR (leisure common room) to ease out academic pressure. If you love nature, then I will advise you to come to UEA to have a feel of nature right at your door step. The lake which is situated right on the campus is an amazing place to sit out and experience real natural peace. The Sainsbury centre of world arts which is right at the heart of the campus is one of the most beautiful places I have been to; it has a large collection of world art works. The twenty four hours Library IT section is one of the facilities on campus that encourages excellent academic performance by students and it’s interesting to know that the books section of the library now opens till 12 mid night; this has actually improved my books reading culture.
Finally, for those who love city life, UEA has got an accommodation located right at the city centre with a 24hours bus running into the university from the city centre, it takes about 20 minutes to get to the campus, and it is very convenient. In fact that is where I live. So what are you waiting for? Come on, join the long train of International students studying in one of the UK’s top twenty traditional university with great academic standards.

MBA
MBA
Hello, my name is Ehia, I am presently doing a MBA Full Time program in the Norwich Business School of the University of East Anglia.
After 7+ years of work experience in Nigeria mostly in the Financial Services industry, I decided to do an MBA. A choice of school was particularly important for me because I wanted a school that would provide practical experience, networking opportunities and quality teaching. The NBS MBA met this criteria, the program is structured with three real consultancy projects. That way, there is no break of work experience on my CV because of coming to do an MBA!
The representation is diverse with about 13 different nationalities sharing experiences and providing real opportunity to network, the experience is rich with average work experience of my cohort being 11years. I have found these very rewarding.
Learning here is so much fun as there are several activities that keeps you having fun. The international student society would keep you having fun with excursions, parties and all you can imagine to make your stay worthwhile.
Settling down in Norwich was fast with very friendly teaching team, who are always ready to help and an active student union to sort out accommodation and travel needs.
I have opportunities to engage in sporting events (I love sports) in the UEA Sportspark, I hear it’s the best sports park in any University campus in the country. It’s truly an interesting place.
Little wonder UEA has remained in top 5 for overall student satisfaction!
Norwich is a quiet city with friendly people and interesting medieval sites. A perfect environment for study and close to London.

Adanna Lilian Ohakim
Biomedicine (BSC) , Grade: 2:1
Adanna is one of the 100 students of Afro Caribbean heritage living in the UK to be interviewed and featured in ‘Future Leaders’ magazine 2010-11 edition. This award is open to students who have obtained second- class upper grade or above, those who have done something impressive outside of their studies. In brief, to make to the top 100 list, a student must be ‘well rounded or lop-sided’. We are very proud that Adanna is on the list and congratulate her with her achievement.
Here are some of the reasons why Adanna made it to the top 100 list of Future leader 2010-11:
- Adanna is a member of the steering committee and award committee for the 2010 International Conference for Nigerian Students which she persuaded three states governments in Nigeria to sponsor.
- In 2009 she was given the Award for Outstanding Achievements and Excellence by the Conference.
- She was the Nigerian and West African Student ambassador at University of East Anglia’s International office where she assisted the office with West African student enquiries.
- She was also a student guide, a role that involves conducting tours around campus for prospective students.

During her studies at the University of East Anglia, the outgoing and likeable Adanna has volunteered as a staff assistant at Norwich and Norfolk University Hospital, where she assisted patients in the kidney ward.
We wish Adanna best of luck and hope to hear more successful stories of her in the future.

The Newton International Fellowships scheme is run by The British Academy, The Royal Academy of Engineering and the Royal Society.
The Fellowships cover the broad range of natural and social sciences, engineering and the humanities.
They provide grants of £24,000 per annum to cover subsistence and £8,000 to cover research expenses, plus a one-off relocation allowance of £2,000.
As part of the scheme, all Newton Fellows who remain in research will be granted a 10 year follow-up funding package worth £6,000 per annum.

UEA Sainsbury Research Unit Visiting Fellowships
Visiting Fellowships
Two residential stipendiary fellowships are offered annually for scholars, UK-based or overseas, who have completed a doctorate (or appropriate final degree) and who are undertaking research for publication in the arts of Africa, Oceania or the Americas. Advanced doctoral candidates may be considered in some circumstances.
Applications are welcome from scholars in such fields as anthropology, art history, archaeology, history and related disciplines. Younger scholars as well as established senior figures will be considered. Applications are reviewed by an external selection committee. The fellowships are tenable for up to five months to coincide with the UK academic calendar. Fellows are provided office space and access to SRU facilities.
Research Associateships
These are offered on a non-remunerative basis, allowing visiting scholars use of office facilities, the Robert Sainsbury Library and the opportunity to participate in seminars. Research associateships can be of any duration.

Royal Literary Fund Fellowships
In 2000 The Royal Literary Fund (RLF) set up a scheme of Fellowships at universities and colleges. An RLF Fellowship lasts for one academic year and involves one-to-one tutorials, held on two days a week, which help students develop their academic and expository writing skills, focussing on such issues as researching and structuring essays, clear presentation and expression, writing abstracts and CVs. There may also be occasional seminars but in general the rest of the week is free for the Fellow to concentrate on her or his own work.
