Canadian Student Ambassador

Hi! My name is Fionnuala Sherbot and I’m a first-year medical student at UEA. I chose UEA because Norwich Medical School offered the opportunity for early clinical contact and to study medicine within integrated and innovated patient-centred modules. I also valued the importance UEA places on student satisfaction and support; creating a top-ranked university where students are encouraged to excel both academically and socially!

As an international student, there are so many support systems available to you, all with the aim to help you achieve and succeed. Between the ISAT (International Student Advisory Team), Student Support Services, and your seminar leaders and lecturers, there will always be someone to answer questions, help solve problems or offer advice.

Every student is also assigned a personal advisor for the entirety of their course, a program unique to UEA. This is a senior member of staff who is able to meet with you regularly throughout the year and is there to offer academic, professional and personal advice, guidance and support.

UEA provides so many unique chances for students to explore their interests both within and outside their timetables. I am constantly being invited to participate in conferences, additional training courses, career talks, volunteer opportunities and more! You can choose the level of involvement you want to commit to and will never run out of learning opportunities.

Living on campus has been such a great experience, the pretty lake, grassy fields and brightly coloured trees making it a beautiful place to call home. My flatmates feel like family and I’ve met so many new people and made so many new friends (something everyone is nervous about before university - don’t worry!). UEA is known for having over 200 societies and clubs to join, so there’s always something happening. When you need a break, a short walk, bus or cycle gets you straight into the city – a quirky and historic place full of character and a friendly atmosphere. Norwich has a pedestrian only downtown full of shops, cafes (I’m still on the search for the best cappuccino) and delicious restaurants and always makes for a lovely trip with friends or by yourself.

Being so far away from home (7529km!) is definitely intimidating, but living in such a safe and friendly city, on a campus that feels comfortable and supportive can change your entire experience. Deciding to study at UEA has been one of the best decisions of my life, and I’m so excited to be able to call Norwich my home for the next 5 years.
