Dr Bryan Maddox has worked as a consultant on literacy and non-formal education in Nepal and Bangladesh. The co-director of the Masters in Education and Development at UEA, he is interested in a range of themes related to schooling, learning and literacy in develping countries, including issues of social inclusion and diversity, linguistic diversity, child labour, religious schooling (Madrassa and Maktab), adult literacy and non-formal education. Recent consultancies:
- June 2005: Consultant on literacy and fishing communities, FAO Sustainable Livelihoods and Fisheries Programme (SFLP) (on-going).
- March 2005: Consultant, UNESCO (IIEP), Education and Rural Livelihoods.

Dr Nitya Rao. Recent consultancies:
- June 2005: Output to Purpose reviews of the following projects for DFID-Bangladesh:
1 a) Underprivileged Children's Education Project (UCEP) that provides basic along with skill-based education to urban underprivileged children;
b) FIVDB (Friends in Village Development) that adopts a child-centred approach to primary education in remote parts of Sylhet district, northeastern Bangladesh; and
c) Actionaid's Reflect Project of adult literacy.
April - May 2005: Research entitled “Promoting People's Organisation: The Lokokendra Experience” conducted for Actionaid Bangladesh. This involved a field-based review of the Reflect Programme, focusing particularly on issues of sustainability.
October 2004: Team member for the final evaluation of ESTEEM, a DFID-funded School Improvement Project, in Bangladesh, responsible for a gender and social analysis of the project as a whole, apart from specifically assessing the academic supervision component.
August 2004: Project Completion Reports for several projects funded by DFID-Bangladesh, including UCEP, FIVDB, Reflect, BRAC Education Project Phase III, and a multi-donor funded programme for education of street children.

October 2005: organised Uppingham Seminar on Numeracy for Development: ethnographic perspectives.
July 2005: consultancy for USAID in Afghanistan as team leader designing new literacy and productive skills training.
March 2005: organised follow up seminar in London to the Uppingham Seminar on Measuring Literacy: ethnographic perspectives (see report on www.uppinghamseminars.org)
November 2004: consultant on literacy and livelihoods project, Commonwealth of Learning, Vancouver (a paper was published in connection with this).
December 2003 - January 2004: training course and papers read at conferences and seminars in India (Mumbai and Solapur, Maharashtra); a second visit was made in February 2004 (UP, Nirantar; Mumbai, TISS and Gujarat Research Society).
