Professor Keith Roberts is a Cambridge-trained plant cell biologist. He retired in 2006 as Deputy Director of the John Innes Centre and was a JIF Emeritus Fellow until 2011. He has a long history of public engagement in both the arts and sciences. Starting with his innovative illustration work on James Watson’s text Molecular Biology of the Gene, he subsequently became a co-author and illustrator on the best selling text books Molecular Biology of the Cell (1983, ’89, ’94, ’02 and ’07) and Essential Cell Biology (1998, 2004, 2010). He has written or edited other popular science books including Handbook of Plant Science (2007) and Plant Cell Walls (2010) and was the founder editor of Current Opinion in Plant Biology. He founded the charity Teacher Scientist Network (TSN) in 1994, and as Chair continues to play an active part in its educational engagement project. In 1998, he wrote and presented a three-part TV series, 'Cell City', for the general public (Anglia TV for BBC 2) which has been repeated many times, and has acted as a consultant or contributor to other TV programmes, including John Wyndham (2006) and the BBC's 50th anniversary of DNA programme (2003). As Chairman of the Norfolk Contemporary Art Society, he played an active part in the BA Festival of Science in 2006, organising a President’s discussion session and curating a major city-centre art exhibition called 'Making Faces'. In 2009 he devised and curated another Sci-Art exhibition, 'Photo-ID'. In 2008 he was elected a member of the International Society of Art Critics (AICA). He was awarded the OBE in 2007 for his services to plant science. He is Chair of the Steering Group of the CUE east Beacon for Public Engagement at the University of East Anglia, where he is also an Emeritus Professor.

Julie Worrall hails from a Cambridge ‘town’ stock of bakers, bus cleaners and bedmakers, and lives with her children in beautiful North Norfolk. She joined UEA in 2005, after nineteen years in public and voluntary & community sector roles, most latterly, Chief Executive of Victim Support Norfolk. With a Postgraduate Diploma in Management Studies (Distinction, 2003), Julie has extensive project management and partnership experience in housing, homelessness, social policy and criminal justice including a range of ground-breaking initiatives such as the Norfolk Joint Protocol for Homeless Young people, Norwich Link Line (winner, National and European Crime Concern Awards 1997), the first Strategy to Tackle Street Homelessness in Norwich and the Norwich Equality Charter (winner, Anglian Regional Council Equalities Award 1998). For over thirty years, Julie has undertaken a range of voluntary roles including the Samaritans, Cambridge Women’s Aid, Norwich Leeway and NORCAS, the Norfolk based substance misuse charity. She is a trustee of ARVAC, the Association for Research in the Voluntary and Community Sector and represents UEA on the management committee of the West Norwich Partnership. In 2005, Julie instigated and now coordinates UEA’s Annual Community Engagement Survey and in 2007 she co-authored UEA’s successful bid to become a Beacon for Public Engagement. Julie is a member of UEA’s Enterprise & Engagement Executive, UEA’s Sustainability Board and the Association of Universities East of England Community Engagement Group. She is currently researching a doctorate at UEA on the culture of higher education in relation to public and community engagement.

Liane Ward joined UEA in 2008 having previously worked primarily in the Financial and Automotive industry sectors. With an MSc in Organisational Behaviour from Birkbeck College (1995) Liane spent many years designing and delivering bespoke training and development courses both for national and international clients which included the Robert Flemings Group, Ford Motor Company, Royal Holloway, Loughborough University and London School of Economics.  Liane has spent a lot of her career working collaboratively within academia  and industry on embedding leading edge projects around organisational development, training and lifelong learning.  Joining the CUE East team  as Operations Manager has enabled Liane to use her facilitation and brokering skills in terms of working across the wide spectrum of public/community engagement with UEA Staff and students and CUE East partners. The Operations role involves helping partners, UEA staff and students and communities to access funding, resources and expertise. Liane is based two days a week at the Forum in Norwich where CUE East has a permanent city base hosted by BBC Voices.  Recently the Forum was host to the CUE East Sustainable Living Festival which was designed and delivered by the CUE East team.  In addition, Liane has responsibility for ongoing website design and maintenance, monitoring of CUE East funded projects and ongoing design and delivery of additional resources that may be required for successful completion of this innovative four year pilot project.

Ruth Selwyn-Crome joined CUE East in April 2010. Originally trained as an art historian at Camberwell Art School, London, Ruth has spent most of her working life in publishing production; having gained a Postgraduate Diploma in Publishing and Print Production at the London Institute. Ruth has worked with various companies and organisations; from Veuve Clicquot (Businesswoman of the Year Award) and Centerparcs to the British Security Industry Association. Ruth has worked at UEA since 2005 and gained an MA in Creative Writing – Scriptwriting in 2009. Ruth enjoys photography and regularly writes poetry. She has also written plays for the stage which have been professionally produced. She harbours aspirations to win an Oscar some day, but in the meantime hopes to thoroughly enjoy her time working with the dynamic CUE East team.

Helen graduated from the University of Kent at Canterbury with a degree in history then went on to Reading University to study a masters degree in early modern English literature. She completed her PhD in early modern social history “Customary Law, Social Memory and Collective Identity in Early Modern Essex c.1550-1700’ at the University of East Anglia in the summer of 2011. Helen combined research with working in educational outreach and volunteering with school groups at a heritage site in Suffolk.

Angela Carpenter was appointed as STEMNet Brokerage Coordinator for Norfolk in 2009.  Based in the Blackdale Building, her primary responsibility is to engage and work with primary, secondary and schools across Norfolk to enrich and enhance their participation in activities focused on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects.  Angela will research a comprehensive portfolio of events and activities for schools, and broker the relationships between the schools and activity providers.  Angela will be working closely with colleagues across UEA, such as Aimhigher Norfolk, CUE East and Admissions and Outreach, to deliver the very best programme of support possible to the schools.

Hailing originally from Edmonton in North London, Angela was formerly an Electronic Component Engineer and Buyer, but a succession of redundancies led her to decide on a change of direction.  Angela has since worked to support people returning to work, and most recently she was a Work Brokerage Officer at Norwich City College.  Angela is a lifelong Spurs fan, she also enjoys golf, nature and wildlife, art and art history, reading and research, and a variety of music, including heavy metal and punk.  She is also a secret steam enthusiast.  One of her ambitions is to live along the route of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway the other is to indulge in shark diving in South Africa.
