Biographies:
Julie Worrall
- Julie first arrived at UEA in Feb 2005 as the University’s Public & Voluntary Sector Liaison Manager, with extensive management and partnership experience in housing, social policy and criminal justice, in local government and the voluntary & community sector. Before joining higher education she played instrumental roles in several ground-breaking initiatives such as the Norfolk Joint Protocol for Homeless Young People, Norwich Link Line (winner, National and European Crime Concern Awards 1997), the first Strategy to Tackle Street Homelessness in Norwich (cited by the Cabinet Office as an exemplar in the first report of the Social Exclusion Unit) and the Norwich Equality Charter (winner, Anglian Regional Council Equalities Award 1998). She has also undertaken a range of voluntary roles over the past thirty plus years including the Samaritans, Cambridge Women’s Aid, Norwich Leeway and NORCAS. In 2005, Julie instigated and now coordinates UEA’s Annual Public & Community Engagement Survey and in 2007 she led and co-authored UEA’s successful bid to become a national Beacon for Public Engagement (CUE East). Having managed the Beacon as Project Director from Jan 2008 to July 2012, Julie now works as UEA’s Community University Engagement Manager. She is also a sociologist in UEA’s School of Education & Lifelong Learning, researching a doctorate on academics’ perceptions and experience of community. Julie is a member of UEA’s Engagement Executive, a trustee of ARVAC, the Association for Research in the Voluntary and Community Sector, a member of the Society for Research into Higher Education and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Ruth Selwyn-Crome
- Ruth joined CUE East in April 2010. Originally trained as an art historian at Camberwell Art School, London, Ruth has spent most of her working life in publishing production; having gained a Postgraduate Diploma in Publishing and Print Production at the London Institute. Ruth has worked with various companies and organisations; from Veuve Clicquot (Businesswoman of the Year Award) and Centerparcs to the British Security Industry Association. Ruth has worked at UEA since 2005 and gained an MA in Creative Writing – Scriptwriting in 2009. Ruth enjoys photography and regularly writes poetry. She has also written plays for the stage which have been professionally produced. She harbours aspirations to win an Oscar some day, but meanwhile her community engagement related tweets can be found by following Ruth@CUE.
