Students can find managing on a limited budget somewhat challenging, but help and advice is readily available. There is a team of finance advisers in the Dean of Students' Office who can help students access any additional finances they may be entitled to and help them with budgeting. For more information about student financial matters please see the Student Services Money Matters pages. As a parent, you may also find the information on the Directgov website helpful as well, follow this link.
Family members can also play their part by helping their student to budget carefully and plan their expenditure. You may also be able to encourage them to cook for themselves and so avoid spending too much money on convenience foods or eating out.
Many students find part-time work to supplement their income - this has the added benefit of helping them to develop the 'employability' skills that will be invaluable once they graduate. The UEA Careers Service runs a Student Job Shop on campus. Here, students are helped to find good quality part-time work that does not impact on their study, and are offered advice on their CVs and application and interview techniques.
If your student is struggling to manage his or her finances, do encourage them to call in to the Dean of Students' Office to speak to one of the finance advisers.
