The University will always do its best to answer queries and will try to reassure and help family and friends to resolve student problems and concerns. However, only in exceptional circumstances will staff give out any specific information about an individual student, even to callers who identify themselves as parents or partners. We understand that it can be very difficult for a concerned parent ot be told that we cannot even confirm their son or daughters presence on campus, but we have to act in our student's best interests and protect their right to privacy.
We are happy to discuss, in general terms, possible solutions to problems and to pass on advice to callers that they in turn can pass on to their student. We will also pass on messages to students from external callers, and, if we are contacted by parents and given information that concerns a students' wellbeing, we will take account of all relevant information and take any appropriate action.
Of course, if a student gives us permission to talk directly to their parent or other close relative or friend, then we can break our usually strict rule of confidentiality.
Our aim is to provide a supportive structure of help and advice that will build students' independence, confidence and coping skills so that when they graduate they are ready and able to meet any challenges that life presents to them and look forward to a happy and fulfilling future.
