Writing and Study Skills Workshops 2011-12

The Learning Enhancement Team is running a series of workshops to support you in your studies at UEA. The workshops are aimed at helping you to:

  • manage your time effectively
  • become a better writer
  • think critically
  • improve your revision and exam skills.

Workshops will take place in the Library on Wednesdays 2-4pm in the Spring semester. The programme is open to all students registered on UEA courses. No booking is required, but places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Academic writing: an introduction

Wednesday 25 January 2012, 2-4pm Library Conference Room (maximum class size 18)

‘Academic writing’ is often misunderstood, and different subjects have different conventions. This workshop will explore some of the principles of good academic writing that can be applied in various contexts, both in terms of organisational structure and linguistic style. The emphasis throughout will be on helping you make informed choices about how you could express yourself, not telling you how you should do it.


Academic writing: planning and structuring

Wednesday 1 February 2012, 2-4pm Library Conference Room (maximum class size 18)

This workshop aims to help you consider the techniques you might use to produce a coherent piece of academic work. You will reflect on how you have planned and structured assignments in the past and consider a range of techniques to help you optimise these processes.  The techniques which will be discussed include:

  • writing an outline plan
  • how to organise your ideas
  • “signposting” your reader to the structure of your work.

Please bring some examples of assignment details and criteria with you to this session.  It would be also be helpful if you could bring an assignment plan/outline to the session.


Referencing

Wednesday 8 February 2012, 2-4pm Library Conference Room (maximum class size 18)

Referencing your sources is essential if you are to avoid plagiarism in your work. It is also good academic practice, however, and demonstrates your ability to engage with scholarship. This workshop will outline the ‘what’, ‘why’ and ‘how’ of referencing, give you some practice, and answer any questions you may have


Managing your time - CANCELLED      

Wednesday 15 February 2012, 2-4pm Library Conference Room (maximum class size 18)

This workshop will help you to manage your workload effectively and make the most of your time at UEA. It will introduce a variety of time management strategies that you can adapt to your own needs and working style. In particular you will consider the following:
 

  • How you spend your time
  • How to break down your work into manageable tasks
  • How to plan and prioritize your work


Revision Skills

This is a general workshop for students from all disciplines and at all levels from across the University. The workshop will consist of interactive tasks and discussion to encourage you to reflect upon your past revision experiences and to consider useful revision tips. Topics covered will include: What to revise? When to revise? How to revise?

Critical thinking

Wednesday 7 March 2012, 2-4pm Library Conference Room (maximum class size 18)

This workshop aims to help you develop your ability to engage critically with the scholarship related to your discipline and so arrive at a deeper understanding of the issues and debates you are dealing with. Areas that will be explored will include:

  • identifying and evaluating arguments and reasoning
  • identifying unstated assumptions, values and implications
  • evaluating evidence and authorities
  • identifying the stance of an author towards what s/he is discussing


Exam Technique

Wednesday 14 March 2012, 2-4pm
Library Conference Room (maximum class size 18)

This is a general workshop for students from all disciplines and at all levels from across the University. The workshop will consist of interactive tasks and discussion to encourage students to reflect upon their past exam experiences and to help them to develop effective exam techniques. Topics covered will include: how to interpret essay questions, how to approach multiple choice and short answer exams, and managing anxiety.  It would be helpful if you could bring along a past paper or an exam question for use in the workshop.
