Conversation Club

Welcome to the International Students Advisory Team’s Conversation Club.

The Conversation Club is a place where you can practise your English in an informal setting with other students.

The club is open to all UEA international students and will take place every Tuesday evening during term time in the Chaplaincy starting at 7.00pm until 9.00pm.

A team of student volunteers, overseen by the Conversation Club Co-ordinator, Andrew Frost, will be running the sessions

Conversation Club BowlingHi, I’m Andrew frost, a 3rd year Mathematics student and I am currently the co-ordinator of The Conversation Club. I decided to get involved with the conversation club as I have always wanted to meet people from different backgrounds and cultures, but also to share my own experiences as a British student.

The Conversation Club provides a relaxed and friendly environment in which international students can practise their conversational English. The sessions take place weekly, in the evenings, on campus where drinks and biscuits are provided. The Conversation Club is run by a team of students which include me and a group of volunteers. Each week we plan different topics and themes for discussion and these are accompanied by a variety of games and activities. In addition to the weekly sessions, we often organise social events with some of the most popular being badminton, bowling and meeting up in the Union bar. We have also arranged various outings around Norwich and most recently a trip to London to see the Chinese New Year festivities.

The conversation Club is highly valued by the international students that attend. For them it is a great way to learn more about British culture, speak to more native speakers and to make new friends. The club has also provided an opportunity for members to create other peer support groups such as ‘the study group’ organised by Ceylon Zhou.
I can personally say that the experience has been very rewarding for me and I’m sure the other members of the team would agree. I have learned so much about other cultures and customs, met many like-minded people and made many friends.
I would like to say a special thank you to Nick Wenden, Robert Norris, Madeline Hutt, Imrul Ahmed, Nicholas Bernard, Dina Yu and Maria Wang who have all contributed so much to making the Club as successful as it is now.

Unfortunately, most of the team will be leaving UEA at the end of the academic year but I do hope that the club will continue to thrive in years to come. If you are interested in getting involved with the Conversation Club, please contact Jane Amos in the Dean of Student’s office at j.amos@uea.ac.uk.
