Accommodation

As an international student, am I guaranteed accommodation?
First year international students, on their first course at UEA, are guaranteed a single room in University residences for the 2008/09 academic year, provided they have applied by the due date. Students who are offered a place at UEA very close to, or after, the start of the Academic Year and may fall outside the accommodation guarantee may not be allocated a room immediately, although every effort will be made to provide such students with university accommodation as far as availability allows.

What accommodation is available on campus?
Accommodation is available for students in residences on University Campus, in the University Village, and at Mary Chapman Court (flats in the centre of Norwich). Students can apply for an en-suite or standard room. A number of rooms have been adapted to meet the needs of students with disabilities. Rooms in residences are allocated by the UEA Accommodation Office, and most students will be sent an Accommodation Guide and details about applying online in advance of their arrival at UEA. Students in residences sign a licence, the terms and conditions of which are legally binding and applicants are advised to read these thoroughly before applying for accommodation.

Can my family live with me in campus accommodation?
The University has a number of houses available for students accompanied by their families. Demand for family accommodation is high, so it may not be possible
for the Accommodation Office to allocate you University family accommodation in your first year.
For this reason, we strongly recommend that you travel to the
UK on your own initially and invite your family to join you once you
have found suitable accommodation either in one of the UEA family houses or in the private sector.

What if I want to live off campus?
Some students decide to live off campus, in a flat or house owned by a private landlord, particularly those who are bringing their family with them. The housing bureau, known as Home Run, in the Union Advice Centre can assist you by supplying details of houses to rent in Norwich. Please email homerun@uea.ac.uk for details. Students are strongly advised to inspect the accommodation before signing any agreement as the condition of properties can vary widely. All landlords should provide you with a rental contract, if you are interested in renting his/her property. We strongly recommend that you visit the Advice Centre for a contract appointment to have your tenancy agreement explained to you by an Advice Worker before you make a decision to take a room/house and sign the contract. All Home Run landlords have to adhere to a set of minimum standards and if you have problems with your property, the Advice Workers are on hand to help you.

How much will my accommodation cost?
Single accommodation on campus will cost between £250-£400 per month depending on which residence you live in and includes internet and utility bills.

UEA Family Accommodation costs approximately £500-£600 per month, exclusive of utility bills which are charged separately.

Students are able to arrange payments in monthly instalments.

Rents off campus can vary widely but you should expect to pay on average £240 per person per calendar month for a room in a shared house.

In the private sector, families can expect to pay between £500-£700 per calendar month
for a 2/3 bedroom property.

In addition, you should be prepared to pay a deposit (often equal to one month’s rent) as well as water, heating and electricity bills, which will usually be charged separately.
