The Union of UEA Students

The Union exists to enrich the student experience and, as a student at UEA, you are entitled to take advantage of all the available facilities. All registered students automatically become members of the Union and members can join any of the extensive range of clubs and societies and make use of the services provided by the advice and information units. Concerts, films and other entertainments are arranged throughout the year, but mainly in the semesters. The Union, through its own trading company, runs many of the shops and services on campus. Union Officers are elected annually and any student member may stand for election. The Union operates from Union House in the centre of campus: its offices may be found on the first floor. Students who do not wish to be members of the Union may opt out.

The Union publishes a handbook which contains much useful information about the University and Norwich and a number of leaflets of interest to students.

The Graduate Students’ Association has its own site: www.uea.ac.uk/menu/grad_students/

Clubs and societies: The Union supports and administers over 100 clubs and societies which cater for a wide range of sporting and non-sporting interests. Most students become involved in one society or another during their time at UEA since they provide the opportunity to meet other students with similar interests. Club membership is open to all students and a list of activities can be obtained from the Union. If there is no club existing which caters for your own special interest, you are welcome to start one.

Entertainment: The Union organises a varied entertainment programme and the venue attracts many popular British and international bands. There are weekly discos and theme nights. New and classic films are shown during the week.

The Student Union Advice Centre: on the walkway outside the main entrance of Union House offers professional, friendly and confidential advice, either by appointment or on a drop-in basis, on a range of issues including housing, legal, employment, academic and financial matters. The Advice Centre operates a housing bureau, Home Run, which helps students to find off-campus accommodation, and EmployAbility, which advertises details of part-time work for students. The Advice Centre also coordinates opportunities for students to input into the work of the University and to become involved in Union activities such as clubs, societies and the Union’s democratic structures.

The Advice Centre is open Mon – Fri 9.00am–5.00pm (Wed 11.00am – 5.00pm).

Its services are available to all students.  For more information see the website: www.ueastudent.com/advice    Tel: (01603) 593463.

Nightline: This is a confidential listening service funded by the Union and run by UEA students for students. You can call at any time between 8.00pm-8.00am if you are feeling lonely, worried or just want someone to talk to.  Tel: (01603) 503504

Women’s Room: available on campus for women who cannot get home late at night, or who need privacy during the day. The key is available from the Student Advice Centre during the day and from Nightline overnight.
