The MSc by Research programme in the School of Pharmacy is focussed on giving students a firm foundation in pharmaceutical research that will also develop a strong interdisciplinary outlook. Research topics will cut across the traditional areas of Pharmacy, from Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacology, through Drug Delivery to Pharmacy Practice and Medicines Management, in an environment of world-renowned academic and research excellence. Graduates from the MSc would be in a good position to carry out research towards a further degree in Pharmacy, Chemistry, Biology or related areas or to progress their careers in the pharmaceutical sciences or health care professions.
What is an MSc by Research?
The MSc by Research program is focussed on giving the student a strong foundation in research. Full-time students will spend a year in one of the School‟s research groups, chosen by the student on the basis of their interests and previous background and following discussions with the intended supervisor. They will work as a member of the supervisor‟s group, on a project which will also develop a strong interdisciplinary outlook. Projects are either laboratory or office based, depending on their research area. Training will be carried out in the relevant techniques and in the use of instrumentation. The student‟s performance will be monitored throughout the year via regular meetings with their supervisory team, with formal meetings reported to the Graduate School at least three times in the year. By the end of the course, the student will have completed a Masters thesis, following submission this thesis will be examined in an oral examination (a viva voce) by both an external and internal examiner.Alongside research within the School, the student will also become a member of the Faculty of Science Graduate School and will be expected to complete 10 credits worth of personal and professional development courses. These courses are essential and allow the student to develop their presentation skills, scientific knowledge and writing skills.
