Eliahou Dangoor Scholarships

The University of East Anglia is delighted to have received 33 £1000 scholarships to allocate to talented students commencing a science or mathematics degree in September 2012. The scholarships have been generously donated by Naim Dangoor, as part of the Eliahou Dangoor Scholarships Scheme.

Dangoor Scholarships Scheme

Naim Dangoor is an Iraqi Jewish businessman who left Iraq in the 1960s to escape anti-Semitic persecution when the Baath Party came to power. He fled to England, where he had studied engineering decades earlier, and built a property empire in exile.

He set up the scholarship scheme in 2005, at the age of 90, to thank the country that gave him refuge, and stipulated that the money should help students realise their potential – particularly in the science subjects. He also stipulated that all scholarships should go to students at the 1994 Group and Russell Group of leading research-intensive universities, including the University of East Anglia.

All applicants applying for an Undergraduate degree in the Schools of Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computing Sciences, Environmental Sciences, and Mathematics will be assessed for an award. To be eligible, students must be resident in the UK and classed as ‘home’ for the purposes of fees status, be predicted at least ABB at A2 level or equivalent, and have submitted an application for full-time study through UCAS by the 15th January 2012 and choose UEA as their FIRM choice.

Thirty three awards are available and final selection criteria will include final grades, evidence of commitment to and motivation for the subject along with talent in extra-curricular activities.

Successful applicants will be notified and receive their award following Registration.

Terms and Conditions:

  1. Scholarships will only be awarded to students who, having registered at UEA, met or exceeded their offer of at least ABB at A2 level (or equivalent as determined by the University), and passed the final selection criteria. Only grades confirmed at the point of registration will be considered.
  2. Scholarships will only be paid to students who choose UEA as ‘firm’ choice.
  3. Scholarships are awarded for the year of entry stated on your original application form and cannot be deferred.
  4. Scholarships awarded under the Eliahou Dangoor Scholarship Scheme will be in addition to any other UEA scholarships for which you may be eligible.
  5. Scholarship holders will be liable for paying their tuition fees. The scholarship will be paid in a single instalment in the first year following registration.
