Shifting Boundaries of the Public and Private

Postgraduate Research Conference

University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK,

4th – 5th June 2009

The boundaries between the public and private spheres are central to how we

study politics, society and culture, economy, political theory and international

relations, amongst others.

The public/private distinction encapsulates the division between state/

family/individual and market and between individual/family and state. Over

the past few decades, the boundaries between these two spheres have

shifted as a result of globalization and transformations of legal codes, social

attitudes, economic and political systems, the shift from government to

‘governance’, as well as the emergence of ‘new actors’ (for example, the EU,

NGOs, international organizations, etc).

Papers to be given at this conference include:

  • The Politics of Religion in International Relations
  • The legitimacy of Transnational Security Governance
  • The impact of E-government on Government-citizen Relationship and   the Provision of Public Services
  • Protecting freedom of religion and belief in the 21st century: The failure of the private/public distinction
  • The Balancing Act of European Civil Society Organizations: How Credible are European Civil Society Organizations in Their Attempt to represent Public Interest
  • Civic Engagement as private action for the public good
  • The Singapore Blogosphere: What form of public sphere?
  • The Role of Government Intervention in Fostering a Healthy Public Sphere.

The conference is open to all post-graduate researchers. We look forward to

welcoming you to the conference.
