This annual Scholarship is available for students wishing to study for the MA Creative Writing: Poetry degree course and will contribute to the recipient’s full course fees for one year. Established by Kate Birch, a friend of the University, the Scholarship is names after Ink Sweat & Tears – a creative writing webzine run by Kate and edited by Bloodaxe poet Helen Ivory – which celebrates poetry, prose poetry and short fiction and promotes work that combines word and image. The Ink Sweat & Tears Poetry Writing Scholarship will be awarded by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) on the recommendation of a Selection Committee from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
- There shall be an annual Scholarship to be known as The Ink Sweat & Tears Poetry Writing Scholarship. The purpose of the Scholarship is to enable a student to study the MA Creative Writing: Poetry postgraduate degree course offered by the School of Literature and Creative Writing.
- The Scholarship is open to existing University of East Anglia (UEA) students who wish to continue their postgraduate academic study at UEA. Students who successfully completed their undergraduate studies at UEA and who have taken a break before applying for the MA are also eligible.
- The Scholarship shall contribute to the recipient's full course fees at the home/EU rate for a 12 month period.
- The first Scholarship will be awarded in September 2011. One new Scholarship will be available each year until 2013/14. The Scholarship will become payable on completion of registration of the successful student.
- Details of The Ink Sweat & Tears Poetry Writing Scholarship will be publicised to all eligible students with appropriate information on selection criteria (see below), application timescales and value of award.
- The Scholarship will be awarded by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) on the recommendation of a Selection Committee comprising the Associate Deans for Research and for Learning, Teaching and Quality in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and the Director and Admissions Officer of the MA Creative Writing: Poetry course.
- In the event that there are two or more candidates who are deemed to be of equal merit, the Scholarship shall not be divided and the Selection Committee will decide upon the winner based upon interviews with each candidate.
- If in any year, no candidate is judged to be of sufficient merit, the Scholarship shall not be awarded. No person will be awarded a Scholarship more than once.
- Exceptional poetic potential.
- Evidence of commitment to development as a poet.
- Evidence of active engagement with the world of poetry.
- Evidence that the student is at the right stage in their poetic development to receive optimum benefit from their MA studies.
- Evidence of self-motivation, determination and an active approach to establishing and developing a life as a poet.
