Biography

Dr Inthorn joined PSI in 2006, having worked previously at the University of Portsmouth and the University of Cardiff. She completed both her undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies at Cardiff. She is a member of MECCSA and the UEA Media Studies Group.

Key Research Interests

In her research, Sanna Inthorn explores the role of the media in constructing concepts of national and civic identity and the media’s potential to invigorate the public sphere. She is author of German identity and the media and co-author of Citizens or Consumers (Open University Press, 2005). Together with Prof John Street she has recently completed an ESRC funded project on political uses of popular culture by first time voters. She teaches modules on media and identity, media theory and research methods. Sanna is currently supervising PhD students working on gender and the media, new media and identity and sport audiences. She welcomes applications from research students wanting to work on identity and popular culture and national and civic identities in particular.

Teaching Interests

Sanna teaches on undergraduate and postgraduate modules and runs a seminar on research methodologies for the faculty’s graduate school. She mostly teaches on media and cultural theory, media and identity and methods of media analysis.
