Biography

Mike Bowker joined UEA in September 1990, having also taught at the universities of Essex, Queen’s Belfast and Surrey. He has studied at Wolverhampton Polytechnic, Essex University and Voronezh State University, USSR. He was also a research officer for two years at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House) in London.

Key Research Interests

Mike Bowker’s research has concentrated on the Soviet Union and Russia. He has written books on superpower detente (with Phil Williams), Russia’s role in ending the cold war and Russia’s relationship with the US in the context of the war on terror. He has also co-edited volumes on International Relations Theory (with Robin Brown) and Russia in the Yeltsin period (with Cameron Ross).. His latest book looked at Russian foreign policy in the context of the war on terror.

Teaching Interests

Mike Bowker currently teaches undergraduate and postgraduate modules on: International Politics Since 1945; Russian Politics; and Russian Foreign Policy. He welcomes applications from research students interested in any aspect of Russian politics and foreign policy, as well as those wanting to conduct research on the cold war and international politics since the fall of the Soviet Union. He is currently supervising PhD students conducting research on Russian civil society in Putin’s Russia and US-Pakistan Relations.
