Biography

Johan Franzén joined UEA in 2009 after having finished a PhD in modern Middle Eastern history at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, where he also completed an MA (Distinction) in Middle Eastern Studies. Prior to that he studied at Lund University, Sweden where he obtained a Filosofie Magisterexamen and a Filosofie Kandidatexamen in Modern Standard Arabic before moving to the UK.

Key Research Interests

Dr Franzén’s principal areas of research are modern Middle Eastern history and politics, with a particular focus on the Arab East (the Mashreq), especially Iraq. His main research interests are ideologies and intellectual history, colonialism and British imperial history, nationalism, national identities, imperialism and anti-imperialism, resistance movements and revolutions.

Dr Franzén has carried out extensive research on the modern history and politics of Iraq, especially the development of ideological politics in the 1940s and 1950s. His PhD thesis studied the Iraqi Communist Party (al-Hizb al-Shuyu‘i al-‘Iraqi), tracing its ideological development from its founding in 1934 until its demise as a significant political force when Saddam Husayn came to power in the late 1970s. This research will soon (April 2011) be published by C. Hurst & Co. Publishers as

Dr Franzén is also currently working on a general history of modern Iraq, which will be published as A Modern History of Iraq with the same publisher.

Dr Franzén supervises 3rd year UG and MA dissertations in areas relating to the Middle East. He welcomes applications from research students wanting to do a PhD on any aspect of the politics and history of the modern Middle East.
